    Default British Local Election Results

not as important as general elections, but a telling sign of how the votes may go...

according to the BBC, is yesterday had been a general election, the tories would have got 40% of the votes, the lib dems 27% and labour only 26%

currently labour have lost control of almost 20 councils and lost over 250 councillors, most of the losses going to the conservatives, who have their best local election since 1992.

both of my local councils (newcastle-under-lyme and milton keynes for home and uni) have fallen into no overall control... labour lost newcastle to a conservative majority, and the lib dems lost MK, maintaining the biggest share of the seats though.

more scary is the progress of the BNP, who have so far gone up by 13 seats, to an overall total of 33 nationwide, i thikn they've done better than UKIP here...

as a result of all this, blair has announced a cabinet reshuffle, with both the home and foreign secretaries losing their jobs, though in straws case, he's been moved to President of the Council (Leader of the Commons). debate remains on whether prescott keeps his job

    Pretty much what I expected...

Don't like the sound of the BNPs progress though...

I Turned on the TV this morning to be greeted by the site of one of my best friends, on BBC news, celebrating his close win as a conservative candidate in Crawley. He didnt even tell anyone he was running! (perhaps he was ashamed of being a tory)

    Its been a strange day.

Anyway, definitly a good day for the tories. The BNP's rise is very troubling, but they will lose a lot of those seats once their constituants realise that the BNP has no interest in any actual politics.

Looks like a definite Tory government next time around then, if these results are any indication. When is the next general election anyway?

BNP has exactly the same number of councilors as the Green party. Both have +13. According to the same projection tBP mentionned none of those two parties would raise more than 1.5% in General elections.

Although Exeter isn't controlled, it's still controlled by Labour and the Lib Dems. They've managed to turn it into quite a liberal utopia, which as a student suits me fine.

Depends. If Labour are still ahead in the polls and they feel they can win the next election albeit with a small majority it will be in another two years i.e. 2008. However if David Cameron continues to re-brand the conservatives as he is successfully doing (so far) Labour will stretch this parliament out for a full 5 years.

I wouldn’t get to worked up about the BNP, they still only hold a handful of seats in a couple of councils and they don’t have any MP’s. However if you’re a fan of proportional representation I would remind you that this could change as one of the benefits of first past the post system is that it tends to keep out extremists like the communists, BNP, National Front etc.

BTW. Cameron, Hague, Osborne, Johnson = Tory dream team.

    .
I wouldn't exactly call it a benefit if you want to live in democratic country where everyones voices are heard.
In my opinion proportional representation gives every party the number of seats they deserve.
Keeping them out of the system might also be a bad thing as they might try other ways to express themselves. Even if they had a few seats they can't change much at all. It is still only the major parties that have enough power to pass any legislation or similiar.

And well on topic. Well it is indeed troubling to see extremists get more votes... But well with all the talk about troubles of immigration you can't hope that some don't succumb to extremists view on how to deal with it.

if they went less extreme they would get a lot lot more votes.

unfortuantely they say all the right things then make some outrageous policy to stop that from happening

I voted Labour, and my council is still overwhelmingly Labour. Not surprised at the results.

I didnt even receive my invitation to vote. I've recently moved house though, so that could explain it. If i had voted, it would have been for the Lib-dems again, mainly because there leader is called Ming.

The Tories will never gain any more seats than they have in the North to what we call the 'Labour Syndrome' around where I live. If Labour declared slavery legal people in the North would still vote labour, as it is the only party a lot of working class families have ever voted for.

Where I live, t'other side o'the Pennines, the NOC has stayed in control....

But the Tories have the most seats, but seem to have lost one somewhere, the BNP has lost one of it's seats and the Lib Dems and Labour have gained one a piece.

But yet in the genneral elction Labour always wins, I can't understand why.....

Constituency lines, and the fact that because people think a group is able to run a council doesn't mean they think the party can run the country...

i saw a small section of the local elections, and most of the time they spent talking about the BNP. they now hold 33 out of the 8000 council seats, which is nothing, what worried me most was they are now the 2nd largest party in the area i was born (thankfully i dont live there anymore). i put it all down to protest voting. the good thing is they will never gain any form of real power, barely anyone takes them seriously. what keeps them going is the amount of fuss and gossip they cause.

I agree, the BNP won three seats in my area last time, not in council estates though, instead in the middle class areas. It was a protest at the problems happening at the time, the BNP have already lost one of them seat, and will promptly lose the others.
