    Icon4 R:TW Win7 64-bit startup crash

    Alrighty, so;

I installed R:TW the other day, played it a lot, everything working like clockwork. Then I found the R:TR mod and figured I'd give it a try, downloaded, installed, fired up the game - I get the loading screen with the credits and whatnots, and the windows sound of there being a problem somewhere (pling plong). Nothing happens though, so I sit around waiting for a couple of minutes, loading screen is still there, then I figure I'd never noticed my cursor being there before, and tab the game down to see what's going on. I got a little window saying 'Rome: Total War has stopped working...'

I open the properties box and check 'Run as Admin' and 'Run in compability mode; Windows XP SP3', try again, and get the same thing. I uninstall the game, and install it again, this time without R:TR, and fire it up. Again, it's not working, same error, same everything (Except the loading screen being back to normal, of course.)

And that's basically it, tried running as admin and in compability mode after reinstalling it, without any success.

I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, I tried searching the forums, googling and manually looking through the first few pages of the forum board, but apparently people prefer to just write 'I've got a problem, help me!' (mainly in all-caps with bad english and a heap of exclamation points for reasons unknown to sense, logics and plain manners).

    Any ideas?

That version of the game original, BI, Gold Edition, Steam, other? It makes all the difference in the world.

I can play it with Win 7, 64 bit along with many others.

Not entierly sure to be honest, bought it a long time ago and just kept the discs in a folder. I've got BI and Alexander as well but haven't bothered to install them.

And as mentioned, the game worked fine just moments ago, which makes it all even more frustrating.

    Have you disabled the UAC?

Let's try this with it disabled.

    Uninstall RTW.
    Delete the folder.
Run a registry cleaner like Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. you won't believe what this uninstaller leaves behind.
    Reboot.
Now, install RTW and BI and patch it to 1.6. RTR needs it this way and maybe part of the problem.

    Alrighty, on it.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Alright, did all of that, but to no avail. Still not working.

I installed my R:TW away from the 'program files' folders (with 64 bit there are two).

I also turned off UAC before installing the game (it was the first thing I did with my Vista and 7 installs).

I don't need to run in compatability mode either.

No problems - enjoy the game.

If you like it I'd suggest trying out some of the mods - they can make the game a lot more enjoyable and cover various historic periods and fantasy settings.

If you install a mod simply take a copy of your 'Rome - Total War' and create a new folder at the same level and copy the contents there. That way you will never mess up your working install.

Edited: Just read the first post - you've found RTR VII......
