Default Three Centuries of Hastati Defeat an Army!

I play RTR 6.0 Gold, at the present time, and as some of you know, I always play as the Romans.

Last night, I landed 3 centuries of Hastati just south of Gergovia, intended to be a garrison for that town. As I started marching them north, they were ambushed by a full stack of Iberian troops, commanded by a "family member". The ambush failed, and I was able to establish a defensive position on the top of some rocks.

The battle began in earnest, shortly after that.

When it was over, 108 Hastati were dead, but 875 Iberian troops had perished, and their general was dead! The rest of the army fled before my uber-Hastati, and my boys went on their merry way towards Gergovia, each of them having earned an experience chevron.

Out of fairness to the Iberians, I can say that most of their force consisted of Gallic Warbands, and just three units of Caetrati soldiers. But they still should have won, having started out with a 5-1 numerical superiority.

This also is why I fight every battle on the battlemap, no matter how insignificant. It's a human against the AI. You've got a chance, no matter the odds.

Anyone else had a victory against overwhelming odds?

1 against 6. 104 Brutii v.s 682 Gaul. Battle slider showed odds were 3:5 after adjusting for troop quality.(H/H difficulty Large unit scale)

The 104 were 2 generals plus a unit of Equites. The 682 were 6 Warbands and a Barbarian cavalry unit.

Strategically it was against Gauls that were marching on a city. Battle fought in the open field..in the snow. Once defeated I had a more stable front line with no menacing enemy armies in my rear.

Prob the best one I have had was a 1.5 nilla, H/H Large unit, as the Scipii. I was moving toward taking Thaspus for the Senate and landed 4 Hstatti with one Velite to supplement my generals army in the coming siege. Out of no where Hasdrubal pops up with a full stack and jumps on my lone hstatti. So in true Roman fashion I decided to take as many out as I could before Hasdrubal ruined my siege on Thaspus.
I lost but only because of his ellies, if I would of had two more Velites I might of won it.
Hasdrubal had to run back to Carthage after that and get more troops because I cut him down so bad.
Was one of, if not my best, my greatest.

    Well...
A lone unit of elephants (african forest small ones) were hanging around Italian Peninsula. They were suposed to support my ocasional sieges of Roman cities (i was playing Carthage on vanilla vh/vh with some battle upgrading mods, longer fights, no time, weaker cav etc.). Then this bad Romans came out. Full stack army of hastati, velites, principes, equites (one or two town watch i dont remember it well) i think about 1500 angry citiziens of Rome. They attack may 24 elephants. And these peacful but large mammals walk over entire army starting from left to right flank. Huge rout occured. I dont memember how many elephants died but well... few romans were able to carry massage of defeat to senate.

And now i'm playing Parthian campaign (on 1.3 vh/m large mundus magnus no peasants 0 turn recruitment all units avalaible on basic level buildings). I'm using only horse archers and generals and winning battle with Seleucid armies composed mostly from silvershields (pikeman and legionaires), desert infantry and some pike units. In best case i've got same units as AI mostly they outnubered me. It is fun to have not enough money, slow growing cities (if taxes > normal= pop decrase) and few units to scrap something for me from Seleucid Empire.

They were brand-new units, just out of Rome, with only a weapons upgrade going for them. About half-way through the battle, they all had an experience chevron, and that helped them to push the Iberians over the edge, I think.

I have done a similar feat with my Sarmartians. Having maybe 1000 troops in my Sarmartian capital I was forced to defend against 5,500 Hunnic soldiers. Well the battle began with the Huns having 5!! rams against my tiny wooden palisade. I placed my foot archers behind the walls and let them fire arrows at the rams. I managed to set two alight. That left three, all three reached the wall and breached it. I charged my cavallry out of my gate into one ram and placed archers at the two holes, in an attempt to slow the tide. Amazingly I managed to use most of my arrows and defeat he main attacking force, unfortunatly, unkown to me another army had set up on the other side of my city, without rams thankfully. So after I fought off the one army, their was another one their ready to kill my already exhausted troops. Rather than wait for them to form up. I sent my cavalry around to attack their biggest group of troops and I sent my archers that had arrows left around the other side to hold off the soldiers there. Again my cavalry defeated a bigger force and I managed to hit the other soldiers in the back as soon as they attacked my archers. Amazing victory( Heroic as well, i might add), I had less than 250 men left, but had killed over 2,400 Huns as well.

I did the exact same thing. Stuck in my last city for years attacked by the vandals and the huns turn after turn. I had about 4 family members and the rest runaway slave spearmen (or whatever they're called). I would be outnumbered by about 6 to 1 every fight and only prevailed by routing them after fighting on the city square. That was my favourite campaign of any in RTW or BI.

I also had another one where one unit of 12 elephants was attacked by 600 romans (mainly hastati) and i managed to rout them.

One general with 0 command along with 2 saxon hearth units, I was just taking him to govern a city that the governor died of old age.

I was attacked by an entire stack of romans, and I won. They had about 3000 guys to my 112 or so.

This was played in base barbarian invasion, no modifications what-so-ever.

I haven't had any victories yet. But I came really close once. I even took some screenshots of the battle. I was playing Romans, and one of my cities was attacked by a nearly full stack of units.

Here's my Romans before the charge:

Edit: Oh I was also wondering, are there any mods that change the armor on the Roman infantry and/or allow your general to command infantry instead of cavalry? I was dismayed to find out that none of my infantry had Lorica Segmentata armor and that I couldn't have my general commanding infantry when I had no use for cavalry.

This has to be my most epic victory:

I can easily say the vandals didn't come back. And the charcoled Vandals for all I wonder when the Ai will ever learn that taking a city via the gate, with boiling oil poured on them, will not work, if the enterence is blocked

I usually take three stacks and march'em out as a scouting party. One time the were ambushed by the last Gual army that was standing. It was240 against 1,432. We won and the gual army lost all but 34 men. I lost 140.
