You survive Very Hard difficulty level the same way you survive normally - just, more aggressively.
Really, you better just start a campaign with an easy faction and try for yourself - I recommend England for your first time on VH.

I´ve never played SS, but I know that it is a lot harder than vanilla.
However, the same thing still goes - play it, and adapt to the hardships you face.
You´ll fail alot, I presume, and may even lose the campaign some times, but you´ll eventually develop a playing style that´s aggressive enough to handle it.
It´s all about adapting to the new hardships - and not giving in to the rage of losing and the impulse to punch your computer

I actually did that once - my ring cracked the screen so I had to buy a new one...
Lesson learned, I´d say...

Don't confuse being good at AAR's with being good at the game. SS is also extremely easy unless you put BGR on.

If you want some tips on how to make the game much easier I would suggest you click the "Spirit of the Blitz" link in my signature, it shows you how to complete a long campaign wit Sicily in 16 turns on VH/VH and I will, as soon as I finish moving into my new flat, put up my newest AAR which is a long campaign victory with the HRE in 9 turns on VH/VH.
