These are three formations I find useful, in list, the meatshield, the boar's snout and finally the klassic roman army.
Let us begin with number one, The Meatshield.
The meatshield is simple.
C C C I I I C C C
A A A G
It's good for barbarians, but poor against organized armies.
The Boar's Snout
The Boar's Snout is a three-man-only formation, usually used in some advanced formations.
It's basically one type of each unit in a triangle shape.
I A C
Example : I I A A C C
It's good for a decoy, in woods for example, for a surprise Archer or Calvary attack. Next up is the Klassic Roman Army.
It's simple really, and it's mainly used - by me at least - in the early legions.
It goes like this. C C H P H P C C
T T
A A A
G
Here's any overview. The horsemen are to flank and persue, the Hastati, Princple mix is needed extremed. Hastati will be decoys to heavier enemies and the Prinicples will take down those heavier units.
The spear-men are there to guard the archers, after all they are vurnable to cav. attack so use spearmen to deflect them! The general is there to inspire your troops, and the archers are there to scare off elephants and fire at the enemy.
This is my three favorite formations, signing out.
