    Default Ghulam Infantry: what makes them so strong?

    I am seriously at a loss here...

    I like messing around with the files so I decided to make a Ghazny Ghulam Infantry-esque unit for the Ayyubids. I chose the Mamluk Heavy Archers as a model and pretty much made them a clone of the Ghulam Infantry in terms of stats.

    When I decided to test the new unit against their model, the Ghulams still completely stomped the Mamluks in melee. So I went back to tweaking. I changed their formation, I changed their class, I messed around with battlemodels.db, I even gave the Mamluks 50 more men and a greater attack... and everything was useless. What exactly makes this unit so godly in melee?

    Mamluk Heavy Archers use swordsmen animation, and swordsmen animation is bugged in BC, making BC swordsmen very weak. That will be fixed in the upcoming patch.

    Oh, I see. I guess I'll try to balance it out with stats.

    Interestingly enough, it doesn't seem to be bugged for Mutatawwi'a Warriors. I could be wrong, though, but they always excel in melee with swords, much more so than most other units, and it looks like their swords kill when they hit.

    Mutatawwi'a Warriors, technically use sword, however the animation assigned to them is mace animation and not sword and that why they excel.

    Ohhh... that's why jihad gulam and ansar warrior is very weak, and hard to tweak, but cavalry that use sword doesn't have bug right?

    Right. I'm wondering if it would be possible to give all swordsmen units the mace animation, leaving them with a higher attack than macemen but no AP.

    Yes, you can. In fact, it won't take you more than a couple of minutes. So what you have to do is (see screen shot):

    1) Back up your battle_models.modeldb file.
    2) open notepad++ (or any text editor but notepad++ is my personal choice) as admin (if use vista or 7)
    3) open
    your battle_models.modeldb
    4) use "ctrl+h" shortcut to open the replace window
    5) tape "14 MTW2_Swordsman" in front of "find what"
    6) tape "9 MTW2_Mace" in front of "replace with"
    7) finally click on "replace all" and save.

    What I have wrote, haven't been tested (and therefore I'm not responsible of any CTD if it happen) but it should work if you follow the instruction.
    Changing animation have no effect on EDU so you don't need to worry about AP as it won't be added to any sword unit.

    How do I open this file? It's not text, so my Notepad doesn't do it.
