Marcus Aurelius Dolabella Claudus arrives to the Villa Aquilae, the home of the Consul Gaius Marius Aquila, accompanied with his elder son, Aulus, and two slaves which acted as bodyguards. He rings the villa's door bell, and awaits a reply. After a few seconds, a house slave opens the door and lets the Aurelii into the villa (leaving behind the slaves) leading the distinguished plebeians to a guest room, and after asking the for their names the house slave leaves the room, in order to announce the guests to his dominus.

Aquila orders a server to bring wine and goes to see the visitors.

"Welcome to my villa, Marcus and Aulus. I hope you will find the wine to your liking. I had it brought from the south; the land is particularly fertile there and the grapes reflect as much..." He takes an appreciative sip. "You know, Aurelius, my father spoke quite highly of you. I regretted that I never got to meet, but it seems fate had something else in mind. Now tell me, how are you finding Rome? What brings you to my home?"

"Ave, consul Gaius Marius Aquila!" Marcus Claudus greets Marius, doing a reverence, which Aulus copies. Altough Marcus was much more older than Marius, the man in front of him is a Consul, and he had to behave according to his range. The senator takes the cup a slave was lending to him, but he doesn't drink, yet. "Yes, yes... Your father, the good ol' Publius. He was such a great merchant, and a better Roman, let me tell you, consul. He would be so proud you", the old senator drinks the wine "So tasty, is it Campanian?", Marcus Aurelius Claudus drinks from his cup, again "It is surely Campanian, which in my opinion, is the best Italian wine, don't you think, Consul?"

"That I do." Aquila grins. "How are settling in? Is there anything you require? Surely you didn't come all the way here just to say hello. That's my job." He laughs at the end to emphasize it was a joke, and that he was not implying the men aren't welcome. Aquila had made a point lately of personally paying a visit to each new senator.

Marcus laughs with the Consul, rather to get more in confidence with Marius than because he found his comment funny.

"Actually, this is more than just a visit to say hello, Marius" says n the Senator to the Consul, before drinking again "You know, Marius, those pretentious patrician senators doesn"t know anything about the fine art of commerce, they are all square, and think the only decent way to become wealthy is sowing the soil. But we're not like them, after all, we come from a long line of fine roman equesters" Claudus coughs. His health was growing worse since the fleet disaster

"I lost all my belongings in that shipwreck, Marius, but I'm not here to make you feel pity for me. I'm here... " Marcus doubted for a second "to ask you for some advice, from a fellow merchant to a fellow merchant"

Aquila raises an eyebrow from behind his goblet. "Please, ask. I will help you in any way I can."

Marcus takes a deep breath before talking "I'll talk you straight, since I believe is the only way to talk to a friend. Marius, you know that my company is bankrupted, I have debts to pay, and the only way to get it to walk again is with money, something I don't have, right now. The reason I'm here, Gaius Marius Aquila, it to ask you for money. Of course, I'll pay you with generous interest,..." And before the Consul could reply anything, Marcus adds:

"..And as a token of trust - and friendship - I give you my eldest son, my pride, to serve you how you best think, Marius"

Aulus, a finely well built and fairly tall youth, aproaches to his father, saluting the eminence he has in front of him.

Aquila's eyes widened. "I can give you thousands of denarii, but your son? Are you certain? I..." He nods slowly. "I will see to it he becomes a fine senator."

Claudus nods, looking pleased for Aquila's words "thank you, Consul" and turning to look Aulus, Claudus adds "I know my son will serve you well" and turning back again to Aquila, he says "I'm also conviced he knows this is the best... For all of us" a moment of silence before someone talks again. Finally, Claudus says "Well, those debtors must think I'm avoiding them, I'll tell them I'll pay them soon" Dolabella Claudus laughs, seeking to ease the situation. "Consul!" the old senator pays a reverence; "son," Claudus puts his hand in Aulus' shoulder. The senator sighs, looking to his son, for what he thinks will be the last time "I must go"

Marcus Aurelius Dolabella excuses himself, and leaves his host and his son alone, crippling. In the villa main door, he meets with his slaves, who help their master to walk, adressing to the port of Ostia.

Aulus Aurelius Dolabella, now alone with the Consul, bows to him and says "Ave, Consul, may with my life or death I serve you well"

OOC: Do you actually need money? I can give you some, it would just be more profitable for me if the debtor thing was purely for RP purposes.

"Vale, senator." Aqulia watched the elder Aurelius leave. He sighed and turned to the son. "You... will appear in the Curia as a senator tomorrow. Nominate yourself for the remaining aedileship, if you feel up to it. You may sleep in a spare room here tonight if you like. My servants will attend to you."

Aulus nods and does everything the consuls said to him "Thank you, Consul" Aulus Aurelius is about to leave, but stops and turns to Marius Aquila "May I do something for you, Consul?"

OOC: it was just for rp purposes, after all, aux can't have/give/do anything related with money or economics I just needed a reason to dismiss him

Sextus arrives, dressed in his finest clothes.

Aulus nods and does everything the consuls said to him "Thank you, Consul" Aulus Aurelius is about to leave, but stops and turns to Marius Aquila "May I do something for you, Consul?"

"Actually, yes. I am expecting guests to dinner tonight. Put on some good clothes and attend. It will be a good way for you to meet some influential senators."

Later that night, the grand dining hall of the villa bustled with the activity of servants setting out food and drink, musicians preparing to entertain, and the already spotless floor and furnishings being cleaned for the umpteenth time. Aqulia and his family oversaw the preparations, although the pater familias preferred to spend his time educating his son Titus on the names and statuses of the expected guests. He expected the boy to follow in his footsteps in the Senate. That left his wife to chastise the servants if necessary (and it often was not; quality help was something the family was quiet proud of) and lecture Lucia on the finer points of entertaining guests; the girl had heard this far too many times and was more interested in whether any of these wealthy men had unmarried sons.

Eventually, the villa was prepared and only waited for the guests to arrive.

Sextus arrives, dressed in his finest clothes.

Aquila personally goes to show him in. "Welcome, my friend!" He grins. "Would you care for some wine? I just had some ivory ware brought in from Africa before the storms hit, and I have been eager to find an occasion to use it."

Aulus walks in the dinning hall, passing a bit unnoticed; he looks around, checking if something is missing in his patron's party. Aulus Aurelius then silently calls a slave, and whispers him some orders regarding the appetizers

"Aquila! Of course! Have your best man pick it out. You're the expert on such things. Bring out the new glasses! Let's break them in!"

Aquila beckons to a server who approaches bearing highly polished goblets of gleaming ivory on a matching tray, and pours the house's finest wine.

Sextus takes a long gulp of wine before admiring the craftsmanship of the drinking vessel. He raises the wine to his nostrils and snuffs lightly. He begins muttering to himself, eyes focused on the fluid in his goblet.

"Hmm... Something Italian, north of Capua. Po or Tiber, probably. I'll say... Po valley. Am I right?"
