Gnaeus arrives at the Domus, shortly followed by his letter to Senator Libanus, accepting the invitation. He shakes his head in disgust, the man lived barely ten minutes from his own villa, bloody slaves...

Candles flicker along the path leading to the villa, illuminating the way as the sun fell in the sky. Several bronzed house slaves from the orient greeted Tranquilus' entourage and invited him to enter the villa. Rose petals and floating candles in the impluvium added an elegant touch, signifying the formality of the event. Tranquilus was led into the triclinium where three couches had been laid out. Lucius appeared to greet his guest.
Welcome, Gnaues, so glad you could make it. Poor old Sextus fell ill last minute and won't be joining us, I hope you will not mind if my son sits in the third couch? I wouldn't want Janus to strike us with bad luck for having an empty dining room.
Lucius guides him to his couch, the seat of honor to the right of Lucius
"I thank you for your Invitation, Lucius." Gnaeus bows his head slightly, "I do not mind at all Senator, though I am sorry for Sextus, i'm sure Janus shall understand."
Gnaeus had noticed the elaboracy of the evening, the candles, the petals, even the formality. Gods' he had missed Rome, it now felt good to be back here, a child no longer, but a Senator. "

Lucius' younger son appeared at the door, as of yet still clad in a tunic and wearing his bollus
Gnaeus, may I present my son, Lucius the younger. Lucius, greet our illustrious guest, he is soon to be Consul of Rome.
Lucius stepped timidly forward and stuck out his hand awkwardly. He looked like a miniature version of his father with short, black hair and brown eyes. His chirpy voice spoke feebly
An h-honor to meet you, Senator Tranquilus.
Lucius will take the toga of manhood in three years' time, he has reached his tenth year...
Almost eleventh! The boy piped in, interrupting his Father
So he should bloody well know by now not to interrupt his father! Now, let us take our seats and await the first course. I believe the chef told me to expect some fresh fish, caught just this morning and salted near Ostia and large eggs.
"An honour to meet you too, Lucius." Gnaeus smiled at the boy before turning back to his colleague, "Is he to follow in the footsteps of his father, I wonder?" Gnaeus asked the man, "Rome needs her Senators and it's families like ours which provide the best of them, Patrician families that is."

Indeed, yes. But I expect I will enroll him in the legions when his time comes. Lucius will receive a formal schooling until 17 and then once he is a man serve in the legions. By the time he is ready to take my place he will be a proper Roman citizen worthy of the Senatorial rank I will pass to him. Wine, Gnaeus?
Several slaves stepped in, pouring the senators a generous helping of wine. Lucius received a small amount of wine and then much water in his glass. A fragrant smell began to rise from the kitchens.
Gnaeus accepted the drink with a thanks. "Any preferences for his legionary placement?" Gnaeus asked smiling, "I am sure wherever he goes he will make a fine Legionary, maybe a Legate, someday."
He noticed the smell, "Fish and eggs? My favourite..."

I have not yet planned quite that far into the future, but I trust an opportunity will present itself. Ah, finally the first course is served.
Slaves appeared carrying plates of small dainties, including fish and all varieties of egg. Raw vegetables filled other platters including cabbage, onion, and radishes garnished with a light honey sauce.
Of course, we have yet to discuss what is on both our minds- the ongoing election and matters of Curial importance.
"Politics and wine?" Gnaeus noted, looking at his glass, "A potent mix." he smiled, "I for one relish the chance to get to kow what is on the mind of my fellow Senators, as i'm sure you do to."

I will be running for the quaestorship and follow the Cursus Honorum to the tee, it is what my prerogative and will be that of my house after me. The old ways die too readily.
Lucius sipped some wine
I hope that you do win the consulship, Rome needs strong leadership.
The Gauls? The barbarians fight amongst themselves for the moment, which is good for us. Gaul is a mysterious and challenging place, however. I do not foresee us making much headway there in the foreseeable future. It would take an enterprising and brave general and a foolish Senate. We do not stand to gain much from its conquest...
Do you refer to the east? I do agree, while although more organized we stand to gain more from the east. Spain, of course, has as much mineral wealth as we shall ever need. We should work to secure both. I find myself particularly pleased at the thought of opening eastern ports under our control. Its all a matter of time, I think. Obviously we cannot just invade the east because we please to. The warring Greeks find any excuse to fight eachother and its only a matter of time before one of them requests Roman aid again. it is how we went to war with Macedon three times, of course.
"I agree." Gnaeus nodded, "regarding the Greeks of course, that is the detriment of civil war. Weakness." he sipped his wine, "Spain?" he asked considering the option, "I agree with you there of course, but we must make the right decisions, one false step and the barbarian dogs will be on us."

The Spanish war could be quite a beneficial one, in terms of loot. If I were you I would push for joint command and get some legions out there to enjoy it as well. Everywhere else seems dormant enough.
Suddenly the chamber emptied, leaving only Lucius and Tranquilus reclined at the increasingly dim table, as the candles burned low.
Gnaeus, I wish this were but a simple dinner party, but I have a mind to discuss some rather important matters. War in Spain is imminent. The one who leads these wars will undoubtedly reap massive financial rewards, as well as possible state honours. This is not only a danger to optimate interests but an opportunity for the rightful men, the patricians and nobiles like ourselves, to assert authority. I believe we could spark a war in Spain given these tribal pleas, and as Consul you could lead three legions into Iberia and conduct this war with the appropriate political backing. I can offer this support for nominal compensation...
Lucius waited and let the words sink in, eager to hear the Consul's response.
Gnaeus smiled slightly, considering the words of the man carefully, "And what, may I ask, would this compensation be Lucius?" he asked thoughtfully, before taking another drink from his glass...
