    Default "Clone soldiers"-I don't care...

I don't know if anyone else shares this feeling, but I could care less if my soldiers are "clones". I have never cared playing RTW and MTW, it has never bothered me one bit. But now CA is putting thier creative talents into doing away with the concept, one that I was scarcely aware of in the first place. It won't make the gameplay any better, so why should I care?

It contributes visually, I suppose. I suppose CA will look impotent if it doesn't improve the game at least visually.
I hope the game allows us to control how many different soldier models/skins per unit...otherwise skinning is going to take twice as long...

    Innovation.

I'm sure not many people cared that all games were made of flat sprites and played in 2 dimensions, but someone decided that wasn't enough, and we are all benifiting from it now.

If something better can be done, then the logical step is to do it.

The more "on/off" options availabe in M2:TW the better, because then people could suit the graphics for the system, such as deciding whether or not there are "clone" armies. Personally I beleive it would be a very nice addition, but if my machine couldn't handle it, I would simply turn it off and not give it another thought.

Why should you care? Are you implying that you'd rather play RTW with MTW's graphics? It's just another graphical feature that adds to the enjoyment of the game.

Better graphics = more positive points for the game, no matter what.

I agree, but at what cost? You may have super ultra graphic, but how will that help everyone if only the most high end systems will be able to run it? im just sticking up for the people who aren't serious gamers.....

This may be spitting in my own bowl (since I won't be able to upgrade from my Radeon 9600Pro 128 MB RAM for a looong time) but we can't expect CA to create new games with old graphics. I do hope that the graphic options will be wide enough for me to squeeze in at the lowest end...

In one point, CA said that this is perhaps the main feature in M2TW. I was all like wtf? I mean if it's major feature to have every soldier a bit different than the other, CA has lost it. I mean in next TW game soldiers will propably show visible sweat and then heat haze effect will appear along with heavy sparkling and glittering in their armour.

It can't hurt I suppose. However, with these things I always wonder if they are symptomatic of a wider approach to a game. IMO, the campaign AI is the weak spot of RTW, followed at some distance by battle AI. Graphics are way down the list. If CA focus one-sidedly on battle graphics, then I'm afraid the rest of the game will become no more than a vehicle for pretty pics. You never know of course. Pretty pics are likely to dominate statements about the AI in advertising.

The closer we get to a realistically looking historical war sim the better. This is just one more step in the right direction and I think it will feel more realistic without clones. Regarding the effect it has on graphics requirements I think this is very marginal. Usually people react that they will never be able to play the total war games with their 2 year old computer but in my opinion this is a area that CA have succeeded farily well in and the fears are often without cause.

Yes, too much focus on the graphics will lead to less work in other areas, while not working on the graphics will produce, a less appealing game (maybe not to established total war fans, but maybe to other who are only interested in how the game looks). CA really have got a tough job on their hands making a game that reaches everyones high expectations, but I am sure they will manage.

I think the soldiers will still be clones with the only difference a unit will be composed from let's 5-6 clone types each type performing more ore less synchronised animations... not much difference from rtw but more diversity and eye appealing. It wouldn't require a **** load of video memory or RAM but a little more than previous version - so if you played rtw ate high detail level and huge unit number expect to play mtwII at medium/medium unless you do an upgrade.

You will never have a game where every soldier is unique.. It just wont happen...

Who woud have expected this to happen back in 2001?

Computers evolve... of course it's going to happen (not now though).

Ps: But I don't need it though.

Graphics are the most easily marketable evidence of a games progression, theres no reason to assume this will be the onlt or indeed major improvement - theyve said this game is more about evolution than revolution, its safe to say i think that this relates to every aspect of the game. Theyve already stated a commitment towards creating better AI, improved diplomacy.. i wouldnt worry

It's a cool aspect. I can't understand people would want to go back to the game-equivalent of black and white tv. But obviously, for some people there is no help.

Probably for the same reason that people say old-school is always better than new ______[fill in the blank].

It creates an elite who can claim to know better. Your parents probably said their music was better. There's always those kids who claim LPs and 8-tracks are better than CDs, and I think CDs are better than .mp3s. And so on and so forth. It feels good to claim original knowledge - in which case why do we play TW at all and just go play chess! No graphix needed, pure strategy.

I got nothing against great graphics except that it
    1) makes me spend money on CPU,
    2) takes the developers time off something else and
    3) (good-looks in general) reveals the shallowness of modern people.

I'm also deeply worried that TW games might turn into somewhat similar to the NHL game serie where little else than graphics change.
