Can you supply more details? For example: are you playing Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion, or a mod? And when exactly do the crashes occur? (during the battle loading screen, the campaign map, etc.?) I would very much like to help you, but more info is required on your part.

i am playing Medieval total war gold, it dosent matter if its viking invasion or the regular. what happens is when i combine too many army pieces on the campagin map. the crasehes occur when i have about 12 or more pieces combined. the crash happens as soon as i deselect the large army piece.

I've never run into this problem. Have you tried a fresh install? It could also be your system specs causing the problem––assuming you are playing on a newer computer. There are many threads in this forum that address campaign map CTDs. The strange thing, though, is that you are able to load a campaign... Usually, newer video cards don't even get that far... So here's my advice:

    1) Try a fresh install (if you haven't already) by removing the game entirely from your system and re-installing *outside of* your program files directory (this is if you're using Vista or Windows 7).

    2) Have a look at this thread if you are running the game on a Nvidia card, or something comparable:

(This is what I did to get the game to work on my own system, though I am running on XP.)

Good luck! And keep us posted with your results.

i'm, not sure what that means. do you want me to reinstall it on my desktop or in my C:drive?

Don't worry about this step for now. Just try adjusting your anti-aliasing as explained in the link I posted. If that doesn't work, then try re-installing. But it sounds like your troubles have to do with graphics. (You are using a newer computer, yes?)

(What I meant about installing outside of C: is that sometimes on Vista or Win7 the security software interferes with how the game works; this is mostly true of newer titles like Medieval II, Empire, and Shogun II, so I'm not sure about Med I. To avoid this possible problem, make sure you have full administrative access on your system, or simply install outside of C:, like on an external hard-drive.)

I don't know exactly how to pull it up on Windows 7, but what you need to do is change your anti-aliasing settings to x4 on your *video card control centre*. You can also do this manually through the game settings (I think) by going to options/video settings. You haven't mentioned what kind of card you are using, but I think this fix will only work for Nvidia cards. Also, most new cards have duo-core graphics and MTW can only function using one core. I think that's why changing the anti-aliasing sometimes helps. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about your system to be of more help. As a last ditch attempt at fixing whatever this is, try copying and pasting the Medieval - Total War folder onto your desktop and see if that changes anything. I doubt it will, but it's worth a try. As I said, I think your troubles are due to the very common conflict between the old game and newer graphics drivers. Unfortunately, there are many people who can no longer play the game because of this, and The Creative Assembly hasn't bothered to make an official fix.

EDIT: Just to clarify: the default install folder is C:\ProgramFiles\TotalWar\Medieval - Total War; You can either re-install on a separate (i.e. external) drive (ex. F: or G: ), or you could just take it out of the (default) ProgramFiles folder.

It's possible that your security settings interfere with something in the game, and for some reason, things inside the ProgramFiles folder seem to be affected by this. The weird thing is that the crash is not happening between turns, but right on the campaign map. It sounds like a corrupt file to me (or maybe a missing campaign-map texture).

An obvious question I should have asked before: are you able to play many turns without a crash as long as your units are not combined to large armies?

i know this is a dumb question but what is anti-aliasing?
