How to turn on/off auto_save?

Hi all, first post on this fine forum. I am a long time RTS player and I have been playing NTW for a month or so now after building a new PC that can handle it(love it), and recently the autosave after every turn has stopped working. The autosave has become a bit of a crutch for my NTW playing, I miss being able to back up when I inadvertantly forget to do something important before the end of turn, and of course to remedy any bad auto-resolves for battles too. All manual saves work fine, but no autosave. The only thing I have modified is to turn off the camera shake in the user script, and I searched through that to see if somehow the autosave got monkeyed up when doing that, but it appears that the autosave on/off is not controlled by that script. I have searched all of the settings within the game and have not discovered where to change the autosave. Does anyone know where I can fix this? I am hoping that it is something simple that I am overlooking.

Bumping this thread, seeing as I have had no replies. Is the problem I am having with autosave unusual? I did an exhaustive search of these forums and found nothing relating to setting the autosave, or others experiencing a similar problem. Pretty much every game I have played has autosave frequency/on/off options, but I see nothing of the sort in NTW. When I try to overwrite the auto_save in the save games list (hopinh maybe it will kickstart the autosave), it refuses to do so. This problem arose about a week ago, during that time I had not touched any settings regarding the game at all. Any ideas? Is this Steam related?

you cannot turn it of as far as know, also, bumping 1 day old threads?

Thanks for the reply. I had surmised that autosave after "turn clicks" was "always on", yet mine is now off. Is there anybody who has any ideas about what might be the cause of this?


And yes I bumped a 1 day old thread because I am seeking an answer to a problem, which I figured must be something simple I am overlooking. Thanks for your concern about using a few precious electrons trying to find an answer to my problem.

my point was that 1 day old threads were easily visible, about the auto save, you can always delete the preferences script,than reinstal it and see if that works ( save the preferences script before)

Thanks for the advice, but I already tried refreshing the script file. And as I already said, the autosave on/off function is not controlled there. After doing some investigating I am pretty sure the save games are controlled by Steam. Does anyone have any information that might help me to fix this?

P.S. : 1 day old threads are not on the full site current topic list where most people on TWC would see them. They get buried and languish in this mostly dead NTW section. Only people browsing this specific forum would see it, and since most people who played NTW have moved on to S2TW, the majority of folks who have tinkered with NTW and might have the answer for my problem would never see it- unless it is bumped to the current topic list that is seen by everyone on the site.

You mean you don't have any autosave at all?
I'm pretty sure it can't be turned off (and hence not on again). Or does it just not save often enough?
It's at the end of turn IIRC.

Can only recommend ctrl-s for quicksave.

Yes, the autosave was not working at all. It made one last autosave, and then quit working and refused to make the after-turn autosave, and also would not let me overwrite the frozen auto_save file. I have now managed to get it working again, so I will list what I did so that anybody in the future who has this problem can find it. I had tried everything I could think of ( short of re-installing the game and d/ling for 2 days) and finally stumbled on the fix. Deleting the "frozen" auto_save file did not work, and deleting all of the save games failed to fix it also. I then tried installing Steam on another OS and played a turn (using the NTW install from it's regular location), and the auto save worked. I then took that auto_save file, transferred it into the user folder in my regular OS and Shazzam!, it worked. Thanks for the input, problem solved.
