Default Do you know how much MB of information an spermatozoon carries?

Eh, just a weird and useless fact I found I wanted to share.

Ever wondered how much MB of information your body cells have? According to recent researches, the number is about 75 MB on diploid cells. So in the haploid cells ( ex: ovules, spermatozoons ) the number should be half of that, about 37.5 MB . So, every spermatozoon carries about 37.5 MB of information.

Considering that every ejaculation carries about 200 to 300 million spermatozoons, it means that every ejaculation will carry insane 8500
terabytes of information - which translates to nearly 9 million gigabytes.

Want to go even further? The "bandwith" of your , erhm , production system, is nearly 2.2 TB/s - if you consider an average time of five seconds .

    Now my question is:

I don't know if you can, but you should totally try it!

Let us know how it goes. Preferably with pictures and/or video.

    In before the lock!

Also, this is major breakthrough we could increase by much the hdd capacity with this!!, I wonder if in the future scientists are going to use sperm to store information? Is pratick, cheap non poluent, renovation source! it's the future

That would be an really unfair move from the mods. This is science!

It's the future man. Who knows what it will bring? :B

I wonder how did they convert the genetic information in MB/GBs though!

I will try to give you a serious answer to this in spite of the nature of the thread and the sources.
First of all, DNA consists of bases and the numbers of these are abbrevated much like electronic data, 1 million bases = 1 Megabase = 1 Mb (not megabyte here!). With the sources in question this mix-up can easily have occurred, but since the OP is aware of the terms diploid/haploid this must be basic knowledge.
The human genome consists of about 3.1 billion basepairs (just google it, not posting a source for that).
In 2008 numbers it is possible to store 3000 megabytes for 1$ and for 1$ you can store genetic information of 100,000 basepairs.
This calls for a source: http://www.nature.com/nmeth/journal/...h0710-495.html
I read those numbers of the graph in the first part of it. The left y-axis represents megabytes/$ (blue squares) and the right one basepairs/$ (red triangles).
Doing the math based on this:
    (3.1*10^9 basepairs * 3,000 megabytes/$)/100,000 basepairs/$ = 93 megabytes/human genome. That this has fallen to 75 megabytes/genome today is not unlikely.
The information stored is usually about 10 times the size of the actual genome since elucidating the length of the string is done by finding similar sequences in smaller pieces of DNA. You need about 10 versions of the same base to be sure that a mistake is not made.
I hope this answered your question or some of it.

Hah, now computer developers should work with this new form of non-poluent information storage.

Best of all, it's highly renewable!
