Just installed SS 6.3 but cannot switch off messaging band. Please help.

Hi all, I have just installed SS 6.3 and all looks ready to go - chose Early Campaign and Leon as faction and waited as campaign map came up. However, I have a 'messaging' black band across the screen with white cursor to left ready for text input. I tried Ctl T which should switch off team messages but nothing happens. Please let me know how to switch off messaging, in fact all to do with Steam as I will always play as 'single player'.

Sorry all, I should have added some detials: My system is Windows XP pro plus SP3, installed vanilla MTW2 and then Kingdoms then SS 6.3. Used setup.exe and choose 'Early' and then launcher.exe to launch.
