    Default Defragmenting Problems

Recently my comp has been slowing up a little so I thought I would defrag my comp. However, when I press the button to do this, a window pops up saying
"Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume (C. Please run Chkdsk /f."
Quite frankly I have no clue what that means. I know it has some program or something in another drive that it doesnt like being there, but aside from that ... Any ideas?

go to start -> run -> cmd, and type in "Chkdsk C: /f" without quotes.

Heres an article explaining what it does:

Thats odd. My computer will run Chkdsk by itself when I turn it on sometimes. It only happens very rarely but is that normal??

I don't believe I got the option to skip it or I most likely would have at the time.

If youre using XP, when scandisk runs on startup you can skip it i think by pressing any key within the window of time it gives you to do so.. 10 seconds or something probably.

Scandisk usualy runs on startup because windows thinks you may have not turned your computer off properly, and thus needs to check the disks for damage that may have resulted. If though you did turn your computer off properly and it still comes up, you may want to read this little tidbit:

    SYMPTOMS:
Although Windows may seem to shut down correctly, ScanDisk may run the next time you start the computer.

    CAUSE:
During the shutdown process, the contents of the virtual cache are written to the destination device. If the destination device is an Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) hard disk, data may be written to the hard disk's onboard cache but not to the disk itself. When this occurs, the data is lost from the cache when the computer turns off.

    To disable Scandisk on startup:
Go to Start > Run.Type msconfig and hit enter.
Click Advanced, and select the "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown" option.
Click OK,OK and then Yes to restart your machine.
    thought it might help

The scan is there for a reason, to prevent the corruption of Windows files. Only turn it off if its giving you a lot of trouble, as for me, it only runs once every 3-4 months or so, so I really don't mind.

If you surf the web at all (or visit forums/chatrooms) you might want to also consider that you might have spyware or other "malware." Even though the object of spyware is not to disable your computer, it can still bring your machine to its knees.

Run as many of these as you can (they each find threats that the others might miss):

    Adaware (freeware, IIRC)
    Spybot
    Webroot Spysweeper (the best)

Ah. And I forgot to mention MS Windows Beta product; but it appears that you are ahead of me on this subject.
