    Default latino protest day

what is this? i've heard from several latino friends and the news that on may first they are effectively going on strike and walkouts from work and school to protest felonizing illegal aliens? i don't agree with the felonization of illegal aliens but i do think that there should be some penalty. what are your thoughts about the whole strike thing?

Honor&glory, this May Day is especially organized for latino protests for the presidents proposed immigration security tightening

its funny corporal hicks, all of the sterotypes mexicans go agisnt are almost 100% true, such as janitors, fast food workers, and busboys. also, the strike against mexican immigration laws by all latinos increases the sterotype of all lations as "mexicans"

Here's some info about May Day.

    Quote Originally Posted by wikipedia
International Workers' Day (a name used interchangably with May Day) is the commemoration of the Haymarket Riot of 1886 in Chicago, Illinois, and a celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labor movement. The 1 May date is used because in 1884 the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, inspired by labor's 1872 success in Canada, demanded an eight-hour workday in the United States to come in effect as of May 1, 1886. This resulted in a general strike and the riot in Chicago of 1886, but eventually also in the official sanction of the eight-hour workday. The May Day Riots of 1894 and May Day Riots of 1919 occurred subsequently.

Due to these Radical Left overtones, May Day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist, and anarchist groups. In some circles, bonfires are lit in commemoration of the Haymarket Riot usually right as the first day of May begins. [citation needed] In the 20th century, May Day received the official endorsement of the Soviet Union; celebrations in communist countries during the Cold War era often consisted of large military parades and shows of common people in support of the government.

The Red Scare periods ended May Day as a mass holiday in the United States, a phenomenon which can be seen as somewhat ironic given that May Day originated in Chicago. Meanwhile, in countries other than the United States and United Kingdom, resident working classes fought hard to make May Day an official governmentally-sanctioned holiday, efforts which eventually largely succeeded. For this reason, May Day in most of the world today is marked by huge street rallies of workers led by their massive trade unions and various large socialist and communist parties — a phenomenon not generally seen in the U.S. (which has a history of strong anti-communism) or the UK.

In most countries other than the U.S. and UK, May Day is often referred to simply as "Labor Day".

Canada, Australia, and New Zealand celebrate their Labor Day on different dates, which has to do with how the holiday originated in those countries; see also Loyalty Day and Law Day.

I for one think that anybody who walks out protesting the deportation of illegal aliens should be arrested themselves. Maybe they don't know English well enough to understand the concept of the phrase illegal immigrant.

They are probably illegals themselves or the children of illegal immigrants

Thats not cool. Most americans cant get a cooks job because we demand more money. Cooking is a great job and is very fulfilling and is also very difficult at times. Most restaurants are full of immagrants and mexicans because they work for less. That is why the owners of the restaurant I am a cook at are trying to push us out so they can hire their immagrant work force and save money. Regardless of quality. They havent said that of course but it is very appearent. When I was told this by one of the other cooks I didnt believe it untill I ate at Denny's and saw all their cooks were Mexicans. Now I believe it.

Maybe you are a bad cook then, because if you're a good chef then you'll find a job at a restaurant that does value quality (and the poor quality food restaurant will get a bad reputation and do poorly). That's how the market works.

In canada we are having labour shortages in the construction trades, and by 2008 its gona be really bad. Send them over here, as long as they dont stay on welfare its all good to me.

They are definitely a boost to the economy by just about every measure. America and Canada have labour shortages, unlike Europe where idiotic social welfare programs are killing the economy and produce 20% unemployment, our economies are still free, growing and prosperous. Hell one of the major problems in Canadian immigration is that we invite physicists and doctors in, but then then our bonehead govt tells them they are uncertified to practice their trade here and they are forced to drive cabs (or jump over to the USA, who gladly takes them).

The US is built on immigration, and over the last 200 years has had large waves of Irish, Italians, Germans, Ukrainians, Polish, Asians, etc. All of whom suffered the same xenophobic backlash initially, but assimilated in a generation or two and joined the middle class (like earlier generations of Hispanic immigrants already have). As long as US politicians don't do something moronic, things will work out. Bush knows this, and the benifits of the immigrants, the trouble is caused by members of Congress both stirring up the xenophobic element to win elections, and latino politicians doing the same by rallying their hispanic constituents around a mexican flag. These two groups play off each other and create a viscious circle, and the common people involved are just being manipulated by irresponsible local politicians. As long as the people at the top (Bush) who don't need to get involved in these idiotic local politics keep a level head, things will work out, and so far everything he's said in this area has been ok.

What these Mexican protesters should REALLY be yelling about is their own governments' poor administration. They shoud be wondering why the Mexican economy can't keep up and provide jobs for its rising population. Maybe say something about the state neopotism that hands out monopolies and concentrates wealth in an elite few who run these innefficient state allied mega-corps that do not promote a healthy national economy and growth. Then Vincente Fox, in an attempt at an easy fix instead of more difficult economic reforms, attempts to "export" this surplus labour to the US. Again, in the end the USA benifits from this labour so Bush isn't complaining too much, but Mexicans should aiming their protesting about their own country's elites for doing such a lousy job guiding the economy which forces them to live dangerously crossing deserts, dealing with smugglers and other gangsters, and living illegally in the USA in their search for oppurtunity and a better future. Take a look at why their own home country is unable to provide this and direct some ire in that direction.

Latinos I've worked with have been hardworking folks. There are a lot of American citizens who would be well served to learn some work ethic from them. (I've been really amused by caucasian kids who think they should make $50/hr mowing a lawn, LOL.)

I'm sitting back with popcorn watching the right wing skewer themselves by angering spanish speakers (a GOP constituency) with racist and semi-racist comments. Keep it up!

I'll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo again this year! That reminds me...I need to pick up some more plantians this weekend. I'm suprised more non-hispanic Americans like myself don't celebrate it...afterall it celebrates a democratic army kicking the snot out of an Imperial French force. What's not to love?

    Here's how I see it:

    1. YES, there should be a guest worker party that protects both parties. I'm not for simply punishment and no opportunities.

    2. NO - you don't get to just skip ahead of the line. Most native Americans have no idea how hard it is to play by the rules and become naturalized. I have several friends from Asia and Europe who have taken the long, hard road to become legal citizens or at the least get their green card. Most of these people have at least a college degree - one is a doctor. If anyone deserves a fast pass to the front of the citizenship line, it's college-educated workers who speak fluent English and have critical skills. Why should they get screwed over by a politically motivated call for general amnesty?

IMHO illegal immigrants should be enrolled in above mentioned worker program - but be penalized by at least 2-3 years in waiting for citizenship.

    3. I'd like to conclude by adding that America's treatment of illegals is far more humane than in Mexico, where illegal immigrants flooding in from Latin America are often turned back at bayonet point. Any Mexican citizen can forcibly arrest an illegal immigrant and the corrupt police have been known to rape/torture/murder those immigrants from El Salvador and Ecuador who cannot afford hefty bribes.

Here's a story about a migrant brutally murdered by Mexican police last week:

Yep posted that in the other large immigration thread, how very 'nice' of Fox to cry for the rights of illegal Mexican workers while allowing his goverment to treat illegals coming into his country as subhuman. I mean god the only demand by US is to make people come here legally its not like people are saying latinos go home, they are simply saying be here legally.

First of all I dont have time to read all this bull crap and stereo types that people wont let go. First of all the Strike is because of HR4437. I might have not taken part of the walk outs (you miss a day of college and you miss a lesson, chapter, etc.) and I'm busy in my weekends. But you people have to understand that immagrent DOES NOT EQUAL MEXICAN OR LATINO, theirs immagrents from asia, canda, europe, africa, australia. Short and simple the US is full of them and this is what makes the US. Its really stupid some of you guys immediatly think immagrents and you think south of the US borders. Stop being hard headed people, and you wonder why the US has a bad representation to countries around the world.
