One tactic is to use your hardcore troops (veterans with gold chevrons) because they don't tire as much moving and fighting up hill. Another tactic u can apply if u have green troops is to move up the hill either on the left or right side of the enemy, rotate them towards them and attack on even ground. Problem with that is sometimes the enemy might unexpectadly attack u when u r on the move and your battle line is all screwed up.

And that is why I tend to advance cautiously in an orderly fashion, but yes I tend to flank hill defenders and attack on as much even ground as possible. Sometimes, if you do it right, you can coax the enemy into getting off the hill while pulling off this maneuver because they'll be trying to turn and face your flanking army. If this happens, it'll be you on top of the hill, and the enemy staring up at you at the foot.

I concur with AirAssault good tactic! but, for me, is also a matter of paying a great attention to the strategical map, the AI always trys to be uphill, I ever try not to attack the AI armies uphill, for me, using the Romans, is ever preferable in these situations, being attacked, and to fight a defensive battle!

    I second that.

Move around the AI. It will either stay put, or do something stupid.

    A defensive Roman?

Rome's all about aggression for me.

I gotta agree with Diocle on this. As far as campaigning goes, I prefer to have be strategically offensive (take the fight into the enemies territory, blockade their ports, intersect their roads) but be tactically defensive, which has all kinds of advantages. If I have to fight uphill, I'll always soften up the enemy with missile troops or siege equipment (which is rarely on hand.) If they have their own missile troops, I'll tempt them further away with cavalry and then run them down. This usually works well against barbarians.

Against Persians, it's less successful, and maneuver is the name of the game. Try this against Gupta longbow archers on high ground, and well, you'd better have a lot of peasants to throw away.

In tactical map? The best tactic, but not easy!!!!
It Is difficult, at least for me, keep the centre, and advance (maybe skirmishing) on two sides simultaneusly!!!
Deuchland! I thik your 'nik' is not enough for you!! you should adopt something more suited like Kaiser Frederik the Great! or Gottfried von Clausewitz!!

I go with the Hastings approach: slowly and steadily climb up the hill, engage them, and if necesary, s=pull back and coax the enemy, where cavalry can cut them down at the base of the hill.

other times I try to find an approach from the flanks or similar to get them off the hill, or fight on more even ground.
I haz a culler!! (really, who gives a darn? its totally meaningless, and it doesn't really accurately reflect who I am)
