i am wondering how do the soldiers gain experience, when i read the stats, it is usually the general that gains exp (about two per battle) and other horsemen most of the time ? How is it working, and exactly does the exp, more attack and deffense, better moral ?
a point I love a lot in Rome Tot War

For a unit to gain exp they have to fight, or shoot arrows, and get lots of kills. After a certain amount of kills they gain experience. The general usually gets more b/c many people use him to chase down routing enemies. Yes, exp does increase the attack and defence of the unit.

Hey, i was under the impresion that the experience was on a per soilder basis, so smaller units build up valour faster as there are less men in the unit. I.e generals B/G.

That makes sense. I just fought a siege. My Equites killed fewer men than my hastati unit but gained 2 experience, whereas my hastati gained none My units don't seem to like experiencing up.

Individual soldiers gain experience. The units overall experience is an average of its soldiers.

I wonder about artillery. Is the experience going to just the men firing the weapon ? As soldiers need more kills for each level up the experience ladder they go...its going to be hard for artillery to gain experience if the unit has only a handful of men trying to earn any experience. Wonder if its always the same men who fire the artillery from battle to battle.

I once had a unit of ballistas that had full exp in a custom battle, and when they got into melee combat with Iberian infantry they dominated. I think that exp affect artillery the same way it does others, maybe it increases attack but that isn't logical. Just because the crew is experienced doesn't mean that their onager shots are more ppwerful.

Yeah, but it will make them more accurate I would think.

What does a general's command rating do? I know that in MTW it raised his soldier's valour. All it seems to do in RTW is give them longer speeches and morale boosts.

I am fairly sure that soldiers get a moral boost, and possibly a defense and attack bonus as well. Hard to really tell for sure.
