    Default Mods Problem

hey, i hope this is the right place. but here is my problem with Rome Total War (patched to 1.5, excluding BI or Alexander):

i installed extended Cultures, but whenever i play a battle, it come up with a whole lot of error messages mostly saying "file <filename>.tga is missing or cannot be found" or something along those lines. it is usually tga files, but sometimes some .cas amongst others.

i uninstalled XC, reinstalled RTW (english) with patches (i own 2 copies, french version, then english version, one of them was a gift, but i speak fluently in both, i dunno if that affect anything, shouldn't) anyway, install XC on it, same error messages, (for instance, when i do a siege battle, i cannot see any roads, buildings, or any man-made structure or building, i can however see some trees, but not ruins or farms, the game still thinks there is a building there only i can't see it, very frustrating (e.g when i am defending, my guys automatically are placed on the walls, but in this instance, they appear to be 'floating')

then, with a tad of rage, i uninstalled it again, and trying again with my french version... again. same error.

then. installed RS2, hoping it was just the mod, nop, this time, the game won't even launch, it just keeps coming with "unable to find fs_s1_forest_elephant_javalinrider" i am thinking they related, but if they not, they both issues.

i am thinking that files are missing for whatever reason, and it's not the game, but it shouldn't do that with 2 different installers in different languages. but i am not sure....

i have been splitting my head open with this... anyone has any ideas?

    thankx.

note: i can post up additional info or crash reports or something if need be, just let me know what

A lot depends on the operating system you are using, where you installed the game to and what you've done with UAC (User Account Control) which is used by Windows Vista and 7.

The recommendation is to keep all games away from the c:\program files and c:\program files (x86) (for 64 bit OSs) folders. Windows (Vista and 7) sees these as 'protected'. The best hting to do is to install to another folder c:\games or something similar.

Part of the problem of installing to either of the two program file folders is that Windows (Vista or 7) will put files into the 'virtual store' or 'appdata' area. This will be any file you change (saves, replays etc). When you do an uninstall it's essential that these folders are also deleted as part of the cleanup.

The path to the folder will be something like 'c:\users\"user account"\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War'. A simple way to finds the start of this path is to run %appdata%.

Edited: The error with the skeleton is not a problem with the RSII mod but with the install. There is a 'solution to known problems' thread in the RSII Technical Help sub-forum that describes how to get around that error.

Edited (2): See this link: here.

Basically, if you instal to the program files folders when you do an uninstall you need to remove traces of the game from the 'virtual store' or 'appdata' area.

If you don't do that then you may be using the same corrupted files.

What he says is this: Keep RTW away from Program Files (the default place the installer wants to place it)... Either choose a second (internal) HDD to install on, or make a new folder named RTW or Games or what ever.
I personally uses a second internal hdd, with a folder called Games, where I install all my games, that way I keep the files as far away from any of Gates attempts to control my files. And about why to disable UAC (user account control): Some, not all, players of RTW has problems with ctds because UAC tries to keep RTW from accessing files it needs.
