    Default Battle formations

Playing as both Rome (and Carthage too, in a separate game), as soon as I try to move my troops in a battle the formation invariably changes to a long row of side-by-side troop formations rather than, say, the classic Roman "checkerboard" of separate lines of hastati, principes, triarii. Any way to prevent this? Somehow, I doubt that every ancient army just lined up shoulder to shoulder and charged...
"We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell them stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I took the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe so I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. Give me five bees for a quarter you'd say. Now where were we, oh ya. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because if the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...."

I don't know. There are the standard formations, when you select one of those for your troops and let them move, will they then stay in formation? If not, I guess that you'll have to stick to your single line or manually move them into position.

Put your troops (all grouped) into the formation you want. Then ungroup them and group them again. From there, if you do the RMB drag to move your guys in formation to another spot, the formation will remain fixed.

...To maintain a chosen formation you have to start the battle first before you "group" your units into the position...so,
...1, Manually position your units into whatever formation in preparation...(quincunx etc)...
    ...2, START THE BATTLE...
...3, Now "group" the formation straightaway whilst still in your original positioning in 1...
...4, now, as you move them off, they will retain your positioning, not the long line, pending no landscape obstacles...(see pic)
