[TUT] Legions of Rome: why and how
Hey everybody, welcome to my second tutorial for Roma Surrectum 2.
In this tutorial i will be discussing the why and how about the legions of Rome.
First up is why you should actually proceed with the reforms.
The reforms in Roma Surrectum picture a series of reforms through roman history, the change from roman landowners paying for their own weapons and equipment to a proffesional army, payed for by the empire.
This is implemented in the mod by increased recruitment- and upkeep cost. Not that it matters much, if you play right you will have enough money for your military. Lets move on with the 'why'. When you take a first look at the unit cards there is not so much a difference in attack or defense between a polybian cohort and a legionary cohort. One of the most significant differences (if you can call it significant) is that the hamata and segmenta legions have higher morale (which does not show on the unit cards). And not to forget the big morale bonus from the first cohort (saved me in many a battle). Lets not forget that legions are just badass
Second we get to the how. How do you train legions? This question has been asked a lot of times.
Time to clear things up one and for all! So, what do we need. For starters we need the city of Akragas reach 24000 population. Build the imperial palace there and shebam!, reforms are triggered. Before you do this it is advisable you build up your unit training facilities (also known as barracks) to a high enough level that you can actually train something. The correct build order is: roman oppidum, organisation -> roman oppidum, colonization -> weapons metal import (if weapon metals are not precent in the region) -> roman oppidum, provincial -> supply of army rations & citizenship & (economic&)fortified region-> Campus Martius -> Roman Fortres -> Curia Hostillia.
With the Roman Fortress you can train the hamata legions, upgrading this to a Curia Hostillia can give you access to Segmentata legions and (more important for me at least) to the auxillia support units. Now you can train decent cavalry and archers almost everywhere you have a Curria Hostillia.
But back to the start of the reform. I will give you now a breakdown of which unit can be build at what building.
Campus Martius: Roman Legionary and Roman Legionary 1st Cohort, Roman Antesigani and Roman Evocatii
Roman Fortess: Hamata Legions (you will no longer be able to build the roman legionary (1st cohort))
Curia Hostillia: Segmentata legions (if availlable for that region), auxillia units including cavalry, archers and light infantry.
And that is the end of my simple breakdown for Roma Surrectum's legions of rome.
Peace!
