Default Interesting Poll, America's Favorite (and Least) Countries

This poll was taken in Feb. 2011, I found it on this site here: http://www.gallup.com/poll/146090/ir...countries.aspx

I've got to say that I can relate to this poll. Iran and North Korea are by far my least favorite countries, although North Korea in my opinion would take the cake, and China would be far below countries like Mexico. Canada honestly never really comes to mind for me, and Japan I have alot of good feelings for.

Discuss, what do you think of this poll? Do you think it's accurate in terms of an American perspective? What are your most favorable/least favorable countries?

That list is short. It would be different if it added South America, more of Europe, and Africa.

Well it goes for the big players at least. I can't imagine sitting people down in the middle of the street and going over every single country.

It makes me laugh how people seem to hate Iran as much as North Korea, and that 11% actually like North Korea: I would have expected more like 2% to like North Korea. As for Iran, don't get me wrong, they're a theorcracy so I don't like 'em either, but just look at Saudi Arabia, their fervently religious and an absolute monarchy, yet 26% more people like 'em.

Ofc though, this thread is about Americans and I'm not American, so I'll leave it to you guys.

Yeah but I did ask for your opinions regardless of nationality, because as you show people from different countries feel different about other countries.

I'm just going to hope the 11% that likes North Korea either were bum rednecks who never heard of Korea, or people who mistook North Korea for South Korea. Either way though it's saddening, no one in their right mind should like North Korea. I'm surprised Iran is somehow more disliked than North Korea.

I would interpret that 11% as elaborate trolling.

Looks like for some, polling has become synonymous with trolling

It surprises me that Russia is so high. Some of that Cold War propaganda must have worn off.

What I don't understand is where is Turkey? I though Americans loved Turks as they are their closest ally??

I don't know, maybe to the government, but in my experience a lot of people including myself are still a little put off by the whole Armenian Genocide Denial thing.

Though Turkey has one of the most anti-American populaces in the world believe it or not, right after Pakistan's.

Perhaps we should make our own TWC poll...

Where did you get that idea? Why on earth would the average American love the Turks? Not to say I think your average American hates Turkey, just that I cant fathom a reason to be anything but indifferent to them.

I dont see Aus anywere :|
Aus if shown would likely rank around canada and the UK. Ive honestly never heard of any American disliking the Aussies... I mean they have the best accent in the world! NZ on the other hand... sure there all right, for an island of sheep shagging hippies, but certainly not on the level of the other members of the Anglosphere

Japan and Germany's rankings make me smile, how things have changed in the last 60-70 years

India receive more love than South Korea? That must be a joke.

Because Turkey and US are extremely close allies and Turkey has a lot of influence in the US. I would think the average American would love its close ally.

The poll disagree that statement however, just look at how low Jordan and Iraq get. On the other hand, India, which is famous/infamous for its policy of third international, actually score an unrealistic high among the poll.

Basically, that poll shows Americans do not like Muslim countries, close ally or not.

it shows ppl are more informed by hollywood stereotypes and media than anything of real substance; in the US, the perception of India and Indians tends either to be Apu from the simpsons or a destination for hippies to indulge in a faux sense of "enlightenment" aided in part by generous doses of hash.
and i gotta say, the Indian elites have played the part well, not disabusing uninformed Americans of that perception and accepting favours and courtship from Western powers whilst dealing under the table with Russia.

Average Americans know little of global politics. I wouldn't be surprised if a third of them still think we're enemies with the UK .

It is sad though that Americans know so little of the world, yet the world knows so much of them. For one thing is that it makes Americans seem ignorant. Then again, in all my years of public schooling I have only had two history courses that were not on American/Californian History. Most Americans probably think Prussia means Russia.
