    Default Hellenistic era

Hi, I love the mod and what you have all done with it.

    Just one question though.. A simple one;

Will you create a mod or mini-mod in the time before alexander the great? When Thebes and Sparta and Athens were a super power? Maybe during the time of Philip the father of Alexander the great?

I would love if you would do that. The period is a warring and diplomatic mess lol. Perfect for this mod IMO.

Thanks again for making this awesome mod!

I won't promise anything, but we're considering this as a serious option for the future. There are more serious options, though. We'll see what the future's going to bring us

Awesome! I brought this up, because there aren't many mods that focuses on that period. It's all the classical era or later on, with a few exceptions. With you guys' talent, a mini mod of that period would be amazing! The Greek part of RTR VII is very well done.

Anyways thanks for considering, I hope others agree with my opinion to pull you towards this idea

Whatever we will do, you should consider that we want to finish VII first, which could still take a while.

DuDeNine - I'll second your request

I've gotten interested in that period as well from reading Christian Cameron's books on wars in that age (eg 'Killer of Men' and the Tyrant series).

And RTR VII is a big plus in that area. I think it is one of the best games I've ever played and I'm loving it. Oustanding guys! Keep up the good work.

Peter Green's book on Alexander the Great is very good, if you are looking for something scholarly

I read parts of that. You can also try Paul Cartledge and his book on Alexander.

I just took a course on Alexander, it was pretty interesting.

I'm looking for a book on the Hellenistic era tbh. Something like following a character through the culture and training of acient Greeks. That's why I would love to see a mini-mod on that era. Theres so much culture and architecture, and wars and alliances and so on. Anyways, I want to study in military history and focus on the acient world.

Thats a fantastic book for Hellenistic era, also you could try " A History of the Hellenistic World" R. Malcolm Errington, (2008) Blackwell Publishing

Yeah, just so you know DuDeNine, the Hellenistic era is post Alexander, not before him, so the title of this thread is a bit wrong Peter Green also wrote a book about the Hellenistic era, but I haven't read it. A good book for the middle part of the Hellenistic era is Polybius

Yes, Polybius is to the late third and second centuries, what Thucydides is to the fifth
Oh yes I just realised, you are asking about pre Alexander, not post.
Well, try an all round academic book like "The Oxford History of Greece and the Hellenistic World" John Boardman, Jasper Griffin, Oswyn Murray- its a collection of Essay covering all aspects of life in this era, from Homer to Hellenistic warfare.
It covers the Hegemony of Sparta and Thebes and rise of Philip II etc

Broadly speaking, it goes Archaic- Classical- Hellenistic-Roman. It's just a way archaeologists divide time for convenience. Hope that helps

So will there be any mini-mod/mod for this time period?

I've read Robin Lane Fox's book since, which takes a very different approach, and I've come to the conclusion that some of Green's criticisms are somewhat unfair, and he goes a bit too far, though he makes good points. Robin Lane Fox, on the other hand, loses credibility with me sometimes with the way in which he tries his best to clear Alexander of all his crimes, and sometimes his writing style is a bit dodgy (he can be overly flowery, and sometimes goes rather off topic, at one point telling the reader about the sunrises and sunsets in the Hindu Kush mountains...). But for all that, his book is also worth reading, and he does also make good points.
