    Default Town Riots!?

Ok. Im not sure how this could of happened but ok. I was playing as the Skipii in the campaign and took over most of African and Spain and Portugal, and thats when it happened. literally a quarter of my major settlements rioted. Before that i built a sizable force of about 5 to 7 town watches in each town and built everything that a town could want, arenas, sewers, etc. And they rioted like if things weren't perfect enough for them. none of the rioting settlements was under siege or blockaded, and the town had a sizable force that pleased every settlement. Why did they riot now if things were so nice before, and getting better?
P.S. i played the campaign to allow the settlement to be governed without a governor.
Yes i know a governor can influence a populations happiness but its the fact that they WERE happy for a while then they got angry and rioted. Info is greatly appreciated

Squalor. It is unbeatable if you have too many farms. If this is the case now, then let them rebel and exterminate them

Next time, try to not build any farms and just rely in public health etc to grow settlements. Yeah it takes longer, but you don't have this issue.

Also, use peasants instead of Town Watch. They are cheaper, and there are more of them. If these are your key heartland cities, then they shouldn't be under any threat anyway.

OK so farms cause riots? That doesn't make much sense is it like a socialist or communist aspect added to the game?

not at all. You are increasing populace within a settlement. Only so many resources to go around and its like that in the real world too, only the ancients didnt have as many conveniences..... Its like living in the heart of a major city, I wouldnt be happy. Living on top of one another....not me. I would move to a much less populated area for sure.

Squalor is inevitable and a stupid feature in RTW, but nonetheless it gives you the opportunity to let it rebel and then exterminate it for the cash. Build 2-3 stacks of Peasants.

y wait and let it rebel ? once u see a settlement growing angry , just give that settlement to an enemy , but make sure u have a small army in that settlement , even one peasant will do .

once u had given that settlement with ur diplomat , your small army is kicked out instantly . use that army to recapture that settlement instantly without pressing 'end turn' . exterminate that settlement's population and reap the cash .. i dont mind killing my own people as long as it makes my people happy . *sound crazy isnt it ? yep, even if you don't build farms and build all the health buildings you will still have this problem late in the game and you'll have to exterminate the settlements every 15-20 turns which IMO is retarded, you can play a mod
or check this mini-mod out http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...hlight=squalor

    I still recommend a mod

Either way. Both can work. My enemies don't like me, however.

A decent governor can have a big influence on the happyness and profitability of a settlement. It can mean that you can get away with a smaller garrison force to keep the population happy.

A bad governor can also have a big influence on the settlment. If one acquires such retinues/traits get them out of the setltement as they can cause a revolt - maybe put him on a small ship and take on some pirates to kill them off.

Recruit governors in settlements that have high level education buildings (or if you can't recruit them (it's been a long time since I played 'vanilla' R:TW) send family members to such settlements to acquire decent retinues/traits).

Also remember you can trade retinues between governors/family members. Simply put them in the same location (I usually do this outside of a settlement) and use the mouse to drag the retinue from one governor/family member to another one.

The other thing to note is that no-one can have two similar type retinues (so a low level health retinue cannot exist with a higher one (such as churigeon). Simply dump that retinue onto a third governor/family member that does not have that type of retinue.

wow I never knew this, so you can, for example, take away a retinue from an old general just before he dies and pass it to another FM ? cool

Yes, it's possible to micro-manage this to a huge extent which can take some time to do.

Don't forget that they can only have one of each type of retinue - so if they already have a 'health' retinue they can't get another one.

I generally am content to get my field generals to have the churigeon retinue - which is the highest retinue that is possible to heal casualties after a battle.

I tend to build up my educational buildings which will generally provide generals/governors/family memebrs with decent retinues (and traits) over time.

I must point out that I don't play vanilla R:TW (and have not since 2006 or so) so the churigeon retinue may not be in vanilla.

Some people swap the retinues in a settlement but I prefer to move the two (or three) characters out of the settlement for the transfer - it just makes it easier - probably because I won't give the retinue to thewrong character.....

Retinues only - not traits. The left hand column and not the right hand one. Traits cannot be moved.

The following governor is ripe to have some retinues added (it's RSII and not vanilla R:TW).
