Its been about 8 months now since Zack Snyder "Sucker Punch"ed us with an awful PG-13 cut of what could have been a good film. And while Zack Snyder sold out on his fans with the awful theatrical release, "Conan" was murdered by a bunch of miniscule children (Spy Kids 4) and civil rights rendezvous (The Help) 5 months later. Doomsday was being spelled out for big-budget R-rated movies...
...until "Immortals" came out. I caught the midnight screening on Thursday night, and
All I can say is, I'm pretty damn impressed.
Not with the script, which in a way was mediocre, but the impressive and sometimes haunting visuals and directing by Tarsem make up for a portion of the obvious cliches in the script, and with good 3D to boot.
Overall, the fight scenes are insane (theres absolutely no way this could have been PG-13, it was more violent than "300"), Henry Cavill is a convincing Superman, Mickey Rourke is a believable villain (unlike Stephen Lang who makes Quaritch likeable in "Avatar", you really just want to maim and kill the Heraklion King Hyperion, which is the purpose of a villain, am I right.)
All in all,
Its pretty much what the "Clash of the Titans" remake should have been. This film proved to be audacious and spectacular, and shows that style-over-substance, if put in the right hands, can make an entertaining movie.
