Steam Gets Hacked

Here's the official statement:

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users,

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

It was only a matter of time I guess. With hackers attacking the PSN, BioWare, XBL (which apparently had zero effect - guess those fees are worth something...), and other high profile databases including more game developer sites/forums Steam was going to be an eventual target.

Just thought I'd let you all know (if you hadn't heard already) since I know many people on here use Steam regularly. Watch those bank accounts and change your account password for good measure.

Bound to happen sooner or later I guess. If they can bring down PSN for months then Steam is fair game really. A good reason never to save your credit card details online.

I just don't understand the point of this recent surge of hackings.

I mean it doesn't seem to be about getting into peoples' bank accounts or anything incredibly harmful, it just seems to be all about causing a scene.

Its just a bunch of sad basement dwellers, and their retarded definition of 'lulz'. Its not funny anymore, and I wish these people get caught and put away.

me neither. i mean if they would close down child porn sites or big fraudeleus banks i would support it, but this... Steam is the best what has happened to pc gaming in years

As far as I know, this was just the forums, right? Not the actual Steam accounts?

Am I the only one hoping for compensation in the form of a free game.

Well that's odd, they hacked both the forum and the Steam account database? I doubt they're off the same network, tbh.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you're right there and they're not. But if they could take say Erik Johnson's password hash from Steam Powered, GabeN's etc....they could probably decipher passwords and then elevate privilege in the actual Steam system by compromising Valve accounts there.

That's pretty annoying in all honesty - I have a good 4-5 Steam accounts with games kicking around that I've collated since the Jurassic era when it was just Counter-Strike on there. I don't know if I can even be bothered to make sure they're all secure!

Well it was inevitable.

And I suppose everyone will still suck up to Steam anyway until something worse happens.

I haven`t used Steam for about a month, but now I have to check MY credit card details haven`t been compromised because I bought ONE (just one) purchase off Steam which was that Rise of The Samurai. Something I deep down knew was a mistake.

I`m really fing pissed off. However, I didn`t let Steam save my details, just in case, but that`s no guarantee.

I hate always being right.

Do we get compensation? i`ll bet not- just a stupid `sorry`.

Doesn't really surprise me neither, but this is nevertheless very frustrating and annoying. It seems that similar news pop up every week that someone hacked something and people's information were stolen etc.
Makes you think that what can you trust anymore? Anyway I hope that people behind this will be caught and punished.

Thing is, these are the sort of people who dont care about what you said. These are the people from the bottom scrapes of 4chan, who would respond to any such moral arguments with "umad?" and posting gifs of their retarded form of 'lulz'. They need to be put away for a long time, in real jails.
