Default Prince Harry on the front line

Prince Harry has threatened to resign if he is not allowed to serve on the front line if assigned there. I can see both sides of the arguement. So should he serve:

Yes: We cannot expect people from all over the country to fight and die and make Harry exempt. He should lead by example and fight where everyone else fights.

No: Unlike the Navy on the frontline in Iraq and Afghanistan he would act like a bullet magnet and endanger troops around him, if he was killed his body may be mutilated and not returned to cause shame and embarresment. In the media frenzied world of today it is inconceivable that his rough location would not be trumpeted for all the world to hear.

    What do you think?

If he wants to go, let him. But have him change his last name on the uniform to Hanover that way no one will know he's anyone special.

Well, I have to admire the spirit of the guy. That is far more ballsy than it feels like over here (Do we see any senator's sons or presidental offspring serving?), but I do realize there's a lot of risks involved.

I'd change his identity and such to make him seem like British Tommy #2030 instead of the prince.

That's great! We need more people in power to actually see what horrors they are causing and this is the best way. If Bush had his daughters sent to Baghdad, we would be out by now!

of course, you could send him out there, surround his unit with hidden special forces, tell everyone where he was and then catch the badguys as they came in to get him.

Might be a tad difficult explaining using the 3rd in line to the throne as bait to the queen if it all went wrong

andrew fought in the falklands, let harry fight in iraq. he's the "spare" anyway...

more to the point, whats the point of spending the time and money training him, if we're not going to bloody well use him.
all it takes is a bit of media discretion, like when charles and andrew were serving. the military simply doesn't state where he's being assigned, where he is departing from, where's currently stationed etc... afterall, the military won't declare where any particular officer is stationed or serving at any given time for normal officers, why make a difference for 2nd Lieutenant Wales or whatever rank he was commisioned with.

Media discretion in this day and age doesn't exist however. Think of the Sun's "security avoidance" "exposes"....

i think it'll be harder for the sun to get a reporter into a militsary base than the palace....

more to the point, if they do, they face some serious legal stuff... not to mention the government can simply put a national secutrity lid on the whole thing,, classify his location at all times...

Lol, the spare. Well, thats nice.

I think Harry should at all times carry a biritsh flag in one hand and a symbol of his royalty in the other. I dont know what the symbol of British Royalty is, so I reccomend a banner with a golden sun that never, ever sets no matter how much it wants to. Whatever happened to banner carriers and drum beaters anyway? They used to be an important part of militaris, but now you hardly ever see a company marching in formation with a banner carrier at the front...its good propoganda, that. Good for morale, good for future generations to look back on those pictures and go "That was whatever company, marching in formation to their next objective. And the person carrying the flag is Prince Harry, royalty of England." That image would be priceless! I dont care if the company is marching around North Dakota, I want to see a picture of them marching in order like the armies of old!

Well, in all seriousness, I dont think Harry should fight. I think the Prince of England, while doing a noble thing, is not using his royalty for the best use, I cant help but think that it would be better if he spent his time studying, or delving into politics or whatever they'll allow him to do, rather than taking the risk of dying needlessly. Royalty should be a leader to the common people, and Harry isnt leading hes just a nameless grunt in this war. Why? Why doesnt someone take it upon themselves to train Harry as a general, because afterall, that is what royalty should be no? Generals, not grunts.

Well, let's just say Prince Harry isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer...

And as for the general idea, I would feel sorry for the men he was commanding.

He's in the army, he should be on the front line like everyone else.

I'd remind you that they did manage it, or claimed to at any rate. And the Sun can still publish, it just gets sued afterwards.

As long as the media doesn't put a bullseye on him by telling everyone where he is at all times then it would be fine. However can we expect the people of the media to possess a sense of ethics? Not really.

They would follow him around and make him and the troops he was serving with a target.

So if you can keep the media in the dark about where he is stationed and what he is doing all should be fine. But if I was an insurgent who saw the Prince of England walking down my street I would kill him. Simple as that.

But do we wish to unreasonably and foolishly augment and increase such danger and jeopardy?

Well, I don't think you can increase the danger any more than what they already experience. The question is where will he be placed? On the front lines? Or in some base or command post?

Sure, I guess if they place him in some base or command post, then that base will become a target. But if they place him on the front lines...well, then it won't make much of a difference to the troops around him.

Let him serve in the front line.

No taliban insurgent or iraqi is going to recognize him in the camo. Let him serve his country. He is a soldier. Soldiers go in harms way.

Imagine if your son or daughter was killed, the knowledge that they would not have been especially targeted if they had not been with Harry at the time. Like the second point states if he is identified he will become a bullet/roadside explosive magnet.
