    Default Couple of newbie ?s

Hello all! I just recently got RSII (as Rome) and I love it so far. I just have a few questions.

First, why are all the Roman troops very inefficient? I mean, they cost at least 2000 to recruit and have a hefty 800 for upkeep. Coming from vanilla RTW, you can guess my reaction :O. Their stats (30 DEFENSE!!!) hardly justifies their price. Almost all the other major factions have troops equal to, if not greater than my Roman ones (Carthage's Late Libyans and Sacred Bands; some Macedon troops, etc), to which I have no counter for the majority of the early game. Is this a bug, or is this for reals? I checked the custom battles and there were major stat discrepancies (ex. Roman Rep. Triarrii in campaign had stats ATT 11, DEF 31 approx, and in custom they had ATT 12, DEF 41).

EDIT: Nvm, I found the songs. But anyone know the song that starts out with some hardcore clarinet, then some flute?

Also, I'm playing BI patched to 1.6, and with the RSII 2.1 patch. Campaign in HARD/HARD.

    Thanks!

They're not inefficient, they are lower in stats to start with but as you're Legions get better (ie named and numbered), they will be more than a match. In the early game, your strength is that your troops have discipline and will, so long as they stay in formation, beat most enemies.

You can't really compare this or any mod to vanilla as it's a complete re-working.

But throw a Polybian Legion unit against a Carthage Late Libyan Spearmen unit (1 vs. 1), and Carthage will wipe the floor with you. Not to mention, that unit that just beat your supposedly "elite" unit had much lower recruitment and upkeep costs.

And I checked the unit cards for both units and they both have excellent morale and stamina, so no contest there (Romans don't have an advantage here either).

the strenght of the romans lies in their formations, you as a player should figure out what formations work and what formations do not. A personal favourite of mine is the hammer and anvil where you pin the troops down with your main battle line (anvil) and then you hit them hard from behind with cavalry (the mighty hammer). The cavalry i use are mostly those guys from capua. They have a very good charge bonus and scare enemy infantry (extra morale drop). Downside is you can only retrain them in capua.

    Hope this helps

Just play the campaign for a day or what 'till you have 24000 people in Akragas (sicily) and hit the reforms... you will first see a type of improved hastati troop type but later the known world could wish there was never a gaius marius

And seriously: my current legions are silver experienced and surely unbeatable

So get out there and re-create the mighty hand and sword of Roman war!!
