    Default British music week

British music has been for decades at the forefront of international music, and the current British music scene is considered by many as the best it has been in years.

So here's what you're going to do. Go and find Virgin Radio's live stream on the internet and listen to British music during UK music week, and see how well it can be done.

    Also: voiceovers by John Cleese.

I agree with you Ferrets... this thread needs a poll... British Modern Music has been better than US and much better than continental Europe since the 1960s....

I try to judge bands based purely on aesthetics rather than their origin. That said the majority of bands I listen to are European, although German/Scandanavian probably outnumber British.

    British Bands all the way!

Most truly great bands come from the UK, and we are still going strong......

You should change the years to before the 80's because thats essentially when the British invasion ended. Bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, as well as much of the later work of the Beatles, Stones, and the Who would be excluded by using the 70's as the cut off.

I voted "British bands before the 70's, American bands after" (though I've always disliked pretty much all music from that era) because really after then, with a few notable exceptions, I don't really know of any major British bands

After/during the 70's? No major British bands?

Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd to name but a few of the great British bands during the 70's....... You must have heard of them!

Not to mention Queen. Oh, and I voted British bands. While the U.S. has produced some good bands/artists, I favor the artists that came from Britain.

    I like both equally.

But I was close to saying "British bands before the 70's, American bands after" if it would have said "British classic rock, American modern rock" I would have voted it.

British bands definitely, and this is coming from an American. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, The Kinks ... Spinal Tap!

The list of great British rock bands is far larger and of better quality then the American one.

the main reason I prefer American rock over British stuff is because it is generally heavier. I haven't heard the British equivalent of Tool or a similar band

I would agree with you totally there. Got to love all the punk/pop rock from the US. Although I do like some of the British bands, (Iron Maiden are good). I can’t help but feel they are nowhere near as heavy as US ones. Of course in the past we have had some amazing bands, but today the likes of ’50 cent’ *shudders* seem to roam our charts.

Fav US bands: Blink 182, Sum 41, Panic! at the disco Nirvana.

Fav UK bands: The killers, Franz Ferdinand(ok they come from Scotland but hey),Iron Maiden.

hate half of those american bands you listed (sum 41-who is actually Canadian, and nirvana I cant stand, with the exception of "smells like teen spirit")

and I though the killers were american...no?

Sorry you are right Sum 41 are from Canada, but hey you dont have to like them. I Just generally prefer that genre of music compared to the latest of British music, which is just too soft for my liking.
