Removing trade route animations

Is there a way to disable the animation along the trade routes (ie miniships on the sea and caravans on the road)?

It's making my game slow as hell, especially around the Aegean with all the sea trade activity.

Play with small unit sizes.

Is there another way besides reducing unit scale? Like changing something in the game's registry or something to disable trade route animations? I prefer playing with a huge number of units.
