Default CTD in battle and some questions about preferences

Ok, I recently got a new laptop with these specs:

    Windows 7 HP x64
Intel i7 2630QM 2,0 Ghz boostable up to 2,8 Ghz
    8 Gb DDR3 Ram
Intel HD 3000 (integrated graphic card)
Geforce 540M 2Gb Ram (dedicated graphic card)

Now, I know RTW can only use one core, so the other three are useless, but with this laptop I am unable to run battles in RS, while I was able with my old laptop with an obsolete Intel Centrino 2,4 Ghz. After a minute or so, the game crashes. I have tried to run it both with integrated and with dedicated graphics, there's no difference.

Then I tried various combinations of graphic options, but there's something I cannot understand. For example, vegetation can be set up in 5 different places (RS launcher, RS preferences editor, RTW main menu, RTW battle menu and manually in preferences.txt). Setting medium (the recommended setting, I do have read that suggestion thread ) in a place sometimes leaves high in another, so my question is...where should I edit graphic preferences?

The last I tried were these (this is of course the preferences.txt file).

If you use the RS Preferences Editor it's much the same as editing the preferences.txt manually. If you change settings in the middle of a battle I'm not sure if they permanently change the settings or not - to do so they would need to update the preferences.txt file. If you change the graphic options via the options menu then that will result in a change to the preferences.txt file.

One thing that can cause confusion is that once a campaign is launched for the first time it takes a copy of the preferences.txt file from the main preferences folder for that mod folder (e.g. play_rome or play_macedon). If you've used the RS Preferences Editor it will only change the file that you've pointed it to - it won't change any of the others.

The 'high res' vegetation that is shown on the Launcher is not the same as the preferences setting (I think). What happens if you use that setting is that high resolution files are used instead of the standard ones. I don't think many people can use them as it tends to have a huge hit on the PC. I play RSII without high-res vegetation but have the in-game settings the highest I can get. I have a decent CPU along with a pair of GTX295s in SLI and I play the game at 2560x1600 resolution.

    hi all!!

i'm a bit confused too about how do i really have to change the preferences. I mean i think that ther's may something not working with the RS preferences editor, for example if i set vegetation quality on normal than in the ingame options i wont see it as setted on medium but on high (same thing if i try to set it on lowest than i will see turned into high) ; if i set effects quality on ultra than i will see it as medium; almost samet hing for effect quality. the point is that some of the changes don't seem to correspond between ingame options and pref editor all the other options seems to be changeable correctly (widescreen, unit detalis, ....) . So that would be better to change the above examples directly ingame avoiding the pref. editor? or i could find another solution?

    tanks a lot, cheers

I personally just change the preferences.txt in the relevant folder (play_faction/preferences) rather than anything else......

I had my personal choices already made in the main preferences folder (I installed on a working copy of R:TW) so they were already set.

The RS preferences editor needs to be pointed at the game folder (play_faction) I think in order to work.

As previously stated I just edit the preferences.txt directly using Notepad or NotePad ++.

hi, that was pointed correctly ...the weird thing is that most of the changes correspond correctly but not all of them...(of course i have the same kind of problems if i try the reverse thing)

ok, after some tries i can say that best solution (if i wanna use the editor) is to change building and unit detail; effect, terrain & vegetation quality, ( the problem with them i guess that comes out cause the options u can choose for them trough the editor don't match exactly their related ingame choices) trough the ingame options, than all the rest trough the editor or manually.

cheers & tanks for ur cooperation.
