    Default Upgrades or Experience?

In several guides it is stated that upgrading weapon and armor is better then buying experience levels for your units.

I'm wondering what the reasoning behind this is.

If you look at the in game stats a gold/gold Sacred Band is equal to a lvl3 experienced version which is 10 gold cheaper.

Gold/Gold Lybian Infantry is 20 gold cheaper then the lvl3 version.

Gold/Gold Phoeni Infantry are 30 gold more expensive then the lvl3 version.

Statwise they remain exactly the same.

It's the same across other factions. (some cost more, some cost less but the stats are the same)

So i'm asking if their is a hidden reason that G/G is always better then exp3, even when G/G is more expensive.

It is not really hidden when one uses common sense. GG is usually taken because Veterancy improves melee skill and defense skill. This provides no defense against missiles however, so people prefer to get gold defense instead, which increases the armor value of the unit. gold attack complements gold defense, and improves weapon damage, aiding missile troops and melee troops alike.

Stat wise they are not exactly the same; they simply appear such. In calculation, skill is combined with armor and attack values.

Some magical effect that wrecks with original game balance. Its the reason mod communities ban it.

The galaxy rewards those willing to shed their life's blood for the promise of power.

I don't take trolls that seriously. I'll always been around, though not always active. I withdrew largely due to disinterest: tired of Rome and sick of Shogun 2. And every time I showed up at RCC, I felt like I was devolving with the same drama--let someone else care.

I've had my fun. There's so much more to life. Did play a few casual battles the past week.

I kinda stopped bothering when i heard they generated a thread with 75 pages of 100 posts each about a clanwar in a week. I got better things to do with better people. Just leading and training will be enough for me. few battles here and there to avoid the rust.

Don't forget that experience improves also morale of units and makes them less likely to start routing and to run amok (in case of scythed chariots, eles, etc.).

But still most players prefer to upgrade weapons and armour first and experience only later.

But as a matter of fact a unit with experience can sustain more casualties until it finally breaks / runs amok than an inexperienced unit.

Of course. How do you think I use Levies? Three experience and maybe some attack.

Cataphracts and Scythia also have uses.

The thing is i wont need morale enhancement if i got Damage and survivability boosts paired with my abilities.

Those require it if they are the mainstay, yes. If i lose my Heavy Spearmen units as armenia i won't shed a tear though, and the little s will rout well fast either way. Those boys might as well get G/G.

And a unit with attack upgrades will cause much more casualties and lose fewer men thus not needing the extra morale.
