Default Moving on from EB - Want a new MOD

I had to send my good video gaming computer to my hometown for school purposes (I'm a League of Legends addict) but I now have far more spare time than school can accommodate. I was an on and off EB player, as I disliked the arcadish half-assing that went into RTW vanilla; however, I am getting bored of that one since I have beaten it 10+ times through with the Romani and several other factions.

I have been browsing through the mods for RTW and noticed mainly this one and RS, but I can't choose. Since there likely a lot of people with experience with both here, could I get a quick evaluation of the differences between the two? I don't want to switch between the two like a crazed dog trying to chase two people at once. From the people I have talked to I was actually swayed more towards this one, but I would love some game-play experience-based assessments if anyone is willing to give it.

Short and sweet EB, RTR and RS are regarded as the top 3 (no particular order) complete conversion RTW era mods. They are, broadly speaking, simular but everyone has their own personal tastes and point of view.

I'd say play it, and you'll know if you like it in short order. Probably much quicker than it would take trying to hash it out from the responses you get in this thread. If you just want a list of unique features see the stickied threads.

But just to add a little meat, In my very humble opinion RTR VII does Greece and Greater Greece better than the rest, if any such broad statement can be made. This was possible because the RTR team decided not to expand the map beyond western anatolia, which given the hardcoded cap on the number of settlements, allowed for the proper arrangement of and density of citys/towns. And in turn the area could now support the large number of factions that were historically in conflict there. So much so that just conquering Greece and the nearby regions is in and of itself is a full campaign, which could be replayed with 6+ different factions and still be interesting each time.

Well I tried this one because of the larger number of positive reviews and I have to say I'm impressed. It will take a while to get over my beloved EB music (I could always transplant it myself, I'm competent at modding ), but otherwise I like the attention to detail and the increased complexity of the factions compared to vanilla. I like how you have more than one temple and they don't have fantasy bonuses (Or bonuses that are less than worthless like EB). I also like the government system - it isn't as complex as EB but I have to say after a while having to remember which areas were which type of government was a pain in the ass - a much more linear setup is very nice.

Can't wait for my tests this week to be over so I can show Carthage what happens when you sink my fullstack army

True. Let him enjoy it first. I recently realised that the more activity I put into leading/modding RTR, the less time I have to actually play and enjoy the game

Most of my experience comes from MTWII, I generated a new map (just an island the size of Anatolia), made 4 factions mostly from the ground up (they were to a varying degree derivatives of cultures in MTWII), made new units and added them to factions (It took me a while but I finally got the swing of that god-awful nightmare of a file they call "modelbd"), custom designed the music sets for each faction (cant make my own music, just pooled together music from vanilla and kingdoms), and did some other basic things like generate new ancillaries with the necessary parameters to acquire them. I think I am competent in all the basic text files - units, buildings, text files where in-game names are assigned to units etc etc. There are a lot of text files I have never bothered to open but that is because I never needed to. By and large I think the text files are easy to figure out, the only file I needed to look up was export_descr_unit, the rest I just tampered with and figured out.

I have never made a new model, music file, or drawn banners or anything like that - I am just a hobby modder who likes to make things out of interest - I modded my entire medieval 2 vanilla game so that all non-peasant units could have three levels of armour upgrades (as long as there were appropriately armoured models available), and stopped late game family members from being 100% alcoholics.

If you guys are making new models and generating new factions from the ground up (not to mention doing history research) I don't think I could do anything that would constitute the hard work, I'm mostly an editor of text files/novice map maker.

I'm good at modding too. I worked on RTR 6 and RTR Platinum, and I'm currently beta-testing ExR 4.

I have no experience with graphics. I've mostly done unit and gameplay balancing.
