Well, anyway, you can use the one you want in Ubuntu; you don't really have to switch to Mint (though it's quite good, from what I read).

Not the place for this I know, but although you can, and it was easy before 11.10, it isn't in 11.10. You can switch and I've tried a few today but none of them switch cleanly, they really don't seem to want you to use anything but unity. Anyway, conversation for another place
We'll get Apple telling us MacOSX is better by far if we carry on

Now we can talk in peace.

I haven't upgraded to 11.10 yet, but I'm using Kubuntu, since Unity is... well... a touchscreen interface for a desktop.

However, I was planning on upgrading my parents laptop, which runs a really old ubuntu, to the latest version.
I might have to do some test before then, because I'd rather they stay with gnome. (I'm only at home two days a week, and linux support over the phone isn't really funny ) )

    Unity has 2 big problems.
The app toolbar is always placed on the left hand side. It can't be moved or re-sized.
Applications menu bar is always placed along the top of the screen, not the window itself but the screen.

Now I have found some pages showing how to change this behaviour so I'll try that. I tried switching to Gnome and Gnome classic but neither are exactly as expected.

I have ubuntu 11.10 for my work laptop, I'm going to try KDE next and see if that works better, I just need to reseat my home to it's own partition. That way, if I do migrate, then I can overwrite the Ubuntu with Mint without affecting that.

I've put Mint 11 on my desktop and it looks a lot better, works a lot more like how Ubuntu did and I am seriously considering switching to it. Officially I'm supposed to use Windows but I ignore that, there's a lot of people who do use Linux in various flavours and I've liked ubuntu until now.

Ubuntu 11.10 is different, if your parents are used to an older linux, they may not like it. Mint on the other hand, based on the brief play I've had with it, is very similar to Ubuntu 10.x in terms of where everything is.

The Mint install gave me an option to upgrade my Ubuntu to Mint but that failed, as I wasn't using it, I just overwrote it instead. For work, that will be trickier so hence my moving partitions around.

So do any of these work to run RS2? I've now got a largely unused Ubuntu partition on my home computer which I've not been able to run RTW on.

You should be able to run RTW with Wine, and thus RSII.
I haven't tested though, but I've a friend managed to get it working.

Well theoretically yes if you use Wine. There is a thread somewhere in which someone describes how to do it and they ran it successfully just fine. Last time I tried with wine though I couldn't get wine to work correctly and as I didn't need it for anything else I never bothered finding out more. I have no idea with mint.

KDE Plasma seems to work well albeit a bit slow on ubuntu 11.10. Seem to have a problem with my VPN for work but I may need to just recreate it.
