    Default Music Suggestion(s)?

As a big fan of the classic rock genre, I'll list the bands (and person) I know and love:

    • The Beatles
    • Boston
    • Cream
    • The Eagles
    • Jimi Hendrix
    • Queen

Any suggestions for my seemingly small list? Yes, I know, it seems limited, but, to tell the truth, I've only been into music for a good year and a half. I know of bands like The Kinks, Pink Floyd, etc., but I don't have much knowledge of them.

Bob Marley & the Wailers! Start with the album Uprising (their most rock-oriented).

I don't like Led Zeppelin much but they fit right in with your list too.

Well...I'm going to suggest what I always suggest when somebody asks for music advice: the Smashing Pumpkins. They were very varied, with a huge number of styles such as Arena Rock, Grunge, Shoegazer, Heavy Metal, Psychadelia, Power Pop, and later Electronica, among others.

Only thing that puts people off them in my opinion is Billy's (leader singer) Voice. Some would class it as being more than a little whiney. But others think he's an amazing singer. Also some think the lyrics are "depressing". I'd strongly disagree, since most of the time it's pop-punk obsessives who just love their contrived "happy" music.

    Songs to try out:
    • Tonight, Tonight
    • 1979
    • Soma
    • Today
    • Siva
    • Frail and Bedazzeled
    • Thru the Eyes of a Ruby
    • Disarm
    • Zero
    • Try, Try, Try
    • Mayonaise
    • Ava Adore
    • Cherub Rock

To be honest it's quite hard picking songs to try by them, since each song is pretty darn different. I've tried to pick songs with a nice mix of styles. Some are quite heavily distorted, but what I would consider to remain fairly melodic.

I would strongly suggest Soma, 1979, Siva, Disarm, Zero, Cherub Rock and Mayonaise.

Soma is a slow burner, starting of soft. Very soft, building up, with some rather beautiful lyrics, until it eventually turns up the pace and distortion, but retaining that wonderful set of lyrics

1979 is an interesting one. Not heavy in the slightest, but fast and upbeat. Again wonderful lyrics. Problem with this song is that Billy gets quite whiny

Siva. I love this song basically. It's nothing really that technical, just a really cool heavy Psycadelia song

Disarm. Another rather beautiful song. Makes use of orchestral elements, and is very powerful and moving.

Zero. A SP classic, but also technically unorthodox. Makes heavy use of pinched harmonics (including one of the most baffelling guitar solos you'll ever hear). Heavy. Very cool. One of the first by them I heard, and went along way into getting me into the band.

Mayonaise. Another beautiful song, and a strong reflection of my feelings on life. Soft and heavy at the same time. Powerful. Moving. Great lyrics. Possibly one of my favorite songs of all time.

Cherub Rock. Fairly fast and heavy, but really upbeat and happy, if in a perhaps subtle way. Has my favorite guitar solo of all time in it.

EDIT: Another song: Tear. One of the oft considered "weakest" album; Adore. This song is powerful. Very powerful infact. It's hard to describe really. Just a good listen. This one is rather depressing admittedly. But in a good way.

If I was to suggest one album you should buy by them, it's Siamese Dream. It's a flawless album in my opinion. Nigh on perfect. Great mix of heavy and soft sounds. Next there is the album that marked their zenith: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Quite simply a truely epic album. 28 songs. 28 great songs. 2 Hours of musical bliss. Again, it makes use of soft and heavy. A defining moment of 90s rock.

Generally the band had a great attitude to music making. Perfectionists till the end, pretty much every 350 odd song they recorded is of a very high quality. And unlike other bands of the time, they wern't hindered by drugs abuse, apart from the drummer Jimmy, who was kicked out for it when the keyboardist died from an overdose...so for the most part you know the music isnt the product of a bunch of smacked up junkies. Always a plus point in my opinion, and something that most bands in the 90s let affect the music.

They did some wonderful videos too actually....but thats more story for me to type out.

Bloomin hell that was a long post. Try them though! They're one of those bands that has something for everyone!

Heard of Pink Floyd but not listened to them? Well start with their most famous album, Dark Side of the Moon. That or get a couple of their songs somewhere, starting with things like Comfortably Numb (which gives a good sense of the band).

Classic rock, try Black Sabbath, Leonard Skynard, ACDC, and Metallica(there old stuff).

Especially Black Sabbath and ACDC, they have to be like the greatest bands in the history of music.

SM, I disagree; I think The Wall is their most famous album. It's definitely my favorite, anyway.

Seleucid, we seem to like the same music, so here's my suggestions in the classic-rock genre:

    • The Beach Boys - very similar to The Beatles, not as good, but almost.
    • Black Sabbath - quite a bit heavier then your taste, but still something to try out
    • Bob Dylan - surely you've tried him out?
    • Fleetwood Mac
    • Of course, the Beatles' solo careers...
    • The Kinks - very Britpop music, they helped start the movement. Listen to "Lola", one of their most famous songs
    • Pink Floyd - very good psychedelic music. Listen to "The Wall"
    • Steve Miller Band - surely you've heard "Rock 'N Me", very famous song. Generally his music is high quality
    • The Who - listen to "Tommy"

Of course, though I've not listened to him too much. When your father has cassettes of Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and a few other oldies you can't help but listen.

If you want AC/DC try anything up til 1979. Brian Williams is good but he does not hold a candle to Bon Scotts' greatness.

    As for music

    -The Pretenders
    -The Romantics
    -The Clash

Im sure they havent been mentioned yet. Good music by them, all classic rock.

    That's Brian Johnson.

And he is very good. Though I've heard Bon Scott singing another version of Back in Black before he died, and it was a lot better. Though Johnson is excellent. Almost as good as Bon.
