This idea for this thread has comes from a small discussion with Oldgamer. But which of the brothers do you respect more and would prefer to follow to war?

Of the brothers I prefer Faramir. A man who was able to inspire courage and loyalty in his men through sheer force of personality and the ability to care for his men. Though not as good of a fighter as Boromir he was able to use his intelligence and strategy to lead to victories that would otherwise be impossible. He also had the moral courage to break the law when the law was immoral.

Definately Faramir. He wasn't a little bastard, and didn't lust for the Ring. (unless I'm getting the book and movie messed up)

Boromir was the more capable, at least thats what i took out of the whole situation. Possibly just because he was the elder of the two though. Who's to say faramir wouldnt have tried to take the ring if he had been in the Fellowship? he wasnt exposed to it for as long as Boromir

Agreed. I prefer Boromir, one reason, we didn't see his past accomplishments and I believe if faramir were the in the same position as Boromir, he would have done the same.

I'd prefer Faramir because he seemed like a more rational person and was more versatile in combat(could use bow and sword equally well). Boromir, although incredibly brave and strong, would make rash decisions and not be as inclined to listen to his subordinates.

    Faramir.
Boromir was played by Sean Bean, and Sean Bean played 006, and 006 tried to kill 007, so, he is t3h suxxorz.

I would say that Faramir was the better of the two. I have little more to add to Farnan's assessment.

From a Battlefield view point I would rather fight side by side with Boromir.

But would only allow myself to be lead by a man of the intelligence and character of Faramir

Im going with Oldgamer. Boromir. Why? He was possesed by the lure of the ring, and tried to get it from Frodo. But he over came that lust and died fighting to save Frodo by fighting the Urak-hai mostly by himself.

Not many people have the strength to renouce the ring.

Hm, that's quite true. I totally forgot about that. But the fact of the matter is that he WAS lured by the Ring.

And according to the books and movie he died to protect Merry and Pippin and not Frodo.

Edit: That is true. It has been a long time since I have seen the movies or read the books. The hobbits all look alike anyway

Yes but he also lived with it under his nose for much, much longer than Faramir

Maybe not, but we know Faramir was having a crisis of whether to steal it within like an hour of discovering it, while Boromir knew about it all that time (im not sure how long the journey was) and only made a move after that very long time. He then repented by giving his life for the fellowship.

based on faramirs reaction to the ring and his desperation to please his father, i believe he would have taken it. Coupled with the fact that one of the main reasons he didnt take it was that he knew it drove Boromir insane

Whatever. I still believe that Faramir was the more cool-headed of the two. He used prior knowledge, unlike Boromir that whoever lusted for the Ring was possessed by it. He knew that it would happen.

Of course, I haven't read it in a while, and I'm not an expert. Might want to ask some LOTR experts

Actually, we can. Men have greed in them, and Boromir went with Frodo for a lot longer than Feremir. We can safely assume that the hearts of men in there are weak, and would take the ring for themselves. Aragorn being an exception because it was his bloodline who were able to destroy the ring and take it fro Sauron.

Okay, I'm the self proclaimed LOTR guru!

I would say Boromir, but this is a tuff call.

Boromir, while he does lust for the ring (in all honesty anyone would, is this realy a fault or human nature) he does redeme himself by fighting to try and save Merry and Pippen.

Faramir, he was a good man/soldier, but he almost cost the Western forces the entire war by not letting Frodo go with the ring, but he too in the end did the right thing.
