    Default Gazprom?

just been watching channel 4 news (i usually do not pay attention to the news...i dislike its biasness most of the time..)

    but ..

this gazprom issue still seems to be going on, today in a statement directed at mostly the brits (but also at europe in general), they threaten 'let us take over your companies or we will sell to china instead'

(not quite as extensive as that..but its along those lines, like 'all your base are belong to us' lol)

    some links: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4925682.stm

It seems to me that this is just capitalism at work: Let me work here, or I go there. That kinda thing.

Capitalism is war by other means. This is the kind of stuff nations shed blood over. But some will always argue that it's better to drop the trousers and bend over rather than fight.

Isn't Gazprom controlled by the Russian government?
IIRC the government has the majority of the board of directors and something like 35% of the stock in Gazprom.
    Real triumph of capitalism there.

I would have thought Gazprom is like a lot of Russian utility companies (Utilities meaning they supply, Electricity, Gas, Water Etc) where by the company along with other nationalised companies has been privatised by the Russian government.

At some point Putin will renationalise Gazprom (paying well over the odds for it like he did with Roman Abramavich's oil company) and Alxei will have to lump it otherwise the next time you see his face will be on a missing poster.

    So basically:
-Europe wants to become less dependant on Russia in case they suddently stop delivering to them.
    And
-Russia threatens to suddently stop delivering because Europe tries to get less dependant on them.

This only proves Europe was right not to trust Russia for their main gas supply.
Europe simply can't take a gamble here because no gas means no industry and this means total economic collapse.
So it's better to pay 3 times as much for a reliable source then to put your entire economy in the hands of some "crazy Ivans".

Btw: if Russia wants to supply to China and America they are going to need some seriously long pipelines (as in: half way around the globe).
Natural gas can't be transported in ships like oil can.
Any ship carrying natural gas half way around the globe is going to consume a huge portion of it's cargo just for it's own propulsion.
This wil make Russian gas very expensive for the end user.

Ya'll better start looking for alternative fuels, then...
    Hydrogen. There's lots of it.

Seriously, if it's so big a deal, why don't the governments just assassinate the gazprom's leaders?

Yeah, all you need is 100GW of electricity to produce enough Hydrogen to produce 50GW of electricity. (or whatever you need).

Because it's a real-world situation, and not some Hollywood fantasy?

What about solar power, or a big ****kin' electric battery?

Assassinating someone is far from the fantastic.

Assassinating several Russian government officials just might create a bit of ill will.
