Orthodox factions cannot be crusaded against.
They can't at the start, but try declaring war on the Pope and see what happens![]()

You seriously cant get a crusade called on a orthodox faction. Trust me, i play venice 90 percent of the time. You dont think ive tried everything(even gifting the pope Constantinople so the byzzies would declare war) to get a crusade called on those annoying, POS Greeks? Its never happened.

Orthodox cities can most certainly be crusaded against, its just they are lowest on the Popes priority list after Muslim and excommunicatees. Once you have a large catholic faction on the Popes naughty list, there tends to be no space on the list of crusade targets from the Byzantines.

If you don't feel like reading then here you go.
"Orthodox factions don't deal with the Pope and they can be common targets for crusades but as long as you keep your borders protected this shouldn't be a problem."
No one is safe from the wrath of the Pope.
You can change the religion of France. It requires modding. I think you can cause a scripted event similar to Lithuania becoming Catholic but I forget if it is possible to change faction religions in that direction once a game begins.
If you do tinker with the files make sure to make original copies. If you have no clue how to mod this it will take you a lot of hours to learn.
He is annoying, but if you're wise you'll make him a good friend -- ie. Get your Man in as Bishop of Rome.
I think the pain of the pope is well balanced by the strength of Crusade -- free army upkeep - you can place upto 90 percent of your armed forces on crusade HUGE income relief on those turns -- super cheap mercs -- movement points -- and one other thing -- OThER crusaders who also arrive and weaken / intimidate the enemy.
If you build churches all over your lands without being asked, recruit priests - so every settlement has one -- you'll advance really fast and 30-40 turns later you maybe have the largest portion of Cardinals.
Acting well also helps -- release prisoners (however tempting to execute =P) - occupy etc.. all the stuff that makes a 'normal' faction like you, same for the pope -- IF you have decent relations with most factions and the pope, instead of a .. "STop attacking or else I excommunicate" you get the .. "Stop attacking or your papal favor will be lowered".
