Um, its taking longer than 2 hours I've waited 5 already.
Steam will automatically pause downloads for when you next have the computer on should you turn it off - accidentally or otherwise. What state does your laptop go into when you close it? If it turns it off or hibernates the system etc, then obviously it won't continue to download until you next get the laptop going again. If it keeps the laptop on and literally turns the screen off and nothing else, then yeah it will continue to download anyway with the lid down.

Simple answer no by default it will go to sleep and all your applications will be on hold including Steam.
You can change this though, presuming you have windows 7 or vista in you laptop:
- The first step to running your laptop with the lid closed is to Click on the "Start" button. For those of you new to Windows 7 this is the circular microsoft button on the lower left side of your screen.
- Then go ahead and select "Control Panel" in the window that appears to the side.
- Go to the section titled "Hardware and Sound." It is located about the middle left section of the control panel window. Click directly on the words "Hardware and Sound"
- In the "Hardware and Sound" window, look for the "Power Options" section. This is located about halfway down the window.
In the power options section, click on "Change What the Power Buttons Do"- In the window that opens, look for the section titled "When I Close the Lid"
Next to this title you'll see two drop down boxes that by default will be set to "Sleep'.
Change the "On Battery" and / or "Plugged In" drop down boxes to "Do Nothing." Depending on which power source you want to use while using external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

56kb modem will take a long time.
Yeah, two hours doesn't seems long to me too... i spent all the month of september downloading the update to Witcher 2, with over 10 GB, with a medium speed of 10 kb/s. Not joking, left the computer turned on overnight to get some 5% progress
I'm not ranting against Steam. On the contrary, i love it, and only buy games through its system, but, for some reason, since the last summer sale, my download speeds were never the same. I guess you just have to learn to live with those things.
Those are dial-up speeds and would take a fortnight or two to download all of the updates. Are you actually on a dial-up modem? Or maybe you're running something more robust and somewhat broken as this current DL speed indicates?
I'm smelling a deeper problem here. Good luck!
