I am rather happy. This should reduce the national debt tremendously. In addition, hopefully, some of the saved money will be invested in education.

My thoughts?
Repost.
Good, now announce large Afghanistan withdrawals on Monday along with cutting the military budget by 20% and I might vote for him. I'd like a 50% cut, but 20% might get my vote.
there's already a thread for this;
we were just saying that it's a good thing; bad, if you're from a neocon group that wanted to exploit Iraq's oil colonial style. whatever happens, violence should hopefully die down, even if order comes from a strongman dictator, i'd like to visit baghdad and Babylon/Ctesiphon one of these days
When they leave, perhaps the Iraqis will finally find a solution to the Kurdish problem
Just to be clear...
The troops are not coming home, they are being moved to Kuwait or re-purposed to Afghanistan. The US is still years away from a peacetime footing for it's ground forces. We have left Iraq but we have not in any way shape or form left the region. We will be in the same boat in Iraq next year as we were in 2003, IE with large forces on the border some of which are ready to move at a moments notice.
This was already discussed in the other thread.
The Iraq War is won. A good degree of this move has to do with posturing for the 2012 election, aside from leaving the Pentagon satisfied.
Thanks! +rep
However, this thread is a little bit different, because it discusses breaking news. So it probably shouldn't be closed.
Also, it's an interesting political move on Obama's part, making such a crucial announcement at such a crucial time. Will it be viewed positively or negatively by the voters?
Mission Accomplished!
