Hey guys do you have any suggestions for a good War film that does not:

A-Have a pointless romance just because you need a pointless romance

B-Is not psychological or at least not heavily focused on it.

C-Does not have an actor who clearly does not fit the role, i.e an American speaking English in an American accent acting as a German officer or a well known Russian sniper....

    So basically:

    None of this:

    and more of this:

Hey I thought Valkyrie was a good movie...

But I agree about pointless romances...Like "Pearl Harbor"...

I get really annoyed when actors speak English for a foreign character, I mean, how hard can it be to have subtitles?

Well i don't particularly like having to read subtitles all the way through a film - if its just one or two characters for a brief period of time it's all well and good, but i'll read a book if i want to read that much text.

And Valkyrie was an extremely good movie - no pointless romance and Tom Cruise looks fairly similar to what the actual character looked like in real life, so i don't see any particular problems with it - athough that is my opinion of course.

I dont mind subtitles as long as their not in the way but thats mostly someone else's fault rather than the film. And Valkrie to me was not a good film, it's an annoying triat of mine but I just cant stand American actors playing foreign roles. If you have a better example of crap Hollywood produces please be my guest and post it up.

Not even the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale saved this movie...

Well if they actually had a bunch of German actors for the movie and added subtitles, I would agree...But since it was an American made film with mostly American and British actors...

Try this: (Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War)

While it may look a bit like it is partly romance, i can assure you its not. The western trailers always try to emphasise things like that.

I bought this on DVD actually, it was a great film and I was not hung up on the Historical inaccuracies!

Das Boot and Stalingrad are both very good German war movies.

Ran is nice, but I prefer the non-fiction Ten to Chi To, Heaven and Earth, which is about the Uesugi and Takeda clans, more specifically Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen.

Waterloo is a classic of course, probably my favourite war film of all time. And as far as I know it's not hollywood-produced.

Soldaat van Oranje is a good warmovie that certainly is very different.

As for hollywood, Platoon seems to be a very good war movie that does seem very realistic.
