Default lets make things interesting in here!

    folks,

for a while now I've been thinking about how we can make this sub-forum a bit more lively as, for me, the way we all handle the troops in a battle is the most interesting part of the game (particularly if you try to use 'historic' tactics).

So, what I'd like to do is encourage people to do battle walkthroughs of their own (3 that I have done are linked below, I don't know if they are good/bad/indifferent but they were fun to do).

I'd also like to encourage people to issue challenges for interesting custom battles (see Can anyone defeat this army set up for an example.

Any battle walkthrough or any challenge (though try to keep them a bit 'realistic') would be welcome.

=== Battle of Larissa - Brutii vs. Macedon ===
=== Battle walkthrough - Rome vs. Carthage (144 armoured ellies!)===
    === Battle against the Gladiators - a walkthrough ===

So what do you think? a good idea? and what else can we do along these lines?

This was a real battle too. Come on people, check it out! I will check yours out later TW, but I don't have time right now.

I'd like to see online compititions. Although, you're idea is good. Get some people, get vanilla 1.5, and then pick some armies and see who can play the best.

    you mean multiplayer?

A thought I had was that I would get a set of battles and have a ladder. You pick a battle (ideally download a save of it), play it and post your results (again ideally with a save game as proof) and then get points based on how well you did. Person with the most points ends up at the top of the ladder.

Of course, we'd have to work out how to allocate points etc but it could be interesting and would be a competiotion (I was also thinking of asking Lord Rahl to do us 3 sigs for the gold/silver/bronze people on the ladder)

Yea, I meant nothing multiplayer. But your idea is also good. I think that we should have a compition on who can do the battles the best and get things in their sig each time they win a round, good idea tac.

well, if you can think of ways to score the results that would be great, for example, what are the various types of result and what order do they occur in (I know of Heroic, Clear, Average, Close (I think)).

Also we need a name for it (and then I can do stuff like front page announcements and bits in the Helios when we launch it on the unsuspecting world) - I'd got as far as the (slightly cheesy) 'Battlezone' but we should be able to improve on that.

I was also planning on persuading some of the main modders to suggest battles (eg. Lusted, Lt, Darth, General Sun etc) to make it a bit more interesting.

    Any other ideas/suggestions?

Make it possible to post new topics in this forum.

About three weeks ago I tried to post a new topic in this sub-forum and got an error. I had successfully posted new topics in this sub-forum before, so figured it was my proxy server or something like that. I retried posting several times over the next day, with no joy. I tried again with a different topic several days later: no luck after several tries. And a third time several days after that, with similar (non-) results. I think I tried a fourth time a week later, and still was not able to post. It was during this time that I realized that the activity on this sub-forum had dropped off SHARPLY and DRAMATICALLY. It has remained so ever since.

There appears to be a technical problem with this sub-forum, only. I can post new topics to all other sub-forums I want, but not here. I can ADD to topics in this forum, just can not start new ones (well, I haven't tried for about a week...) .

Hope that helps; because I really enjoyed this forum before the supply of posts wilted. I still keep coming back, though there is still virtually nothing new to see.

NobleNick, could you try posting a new topic again (put in the text something like 'at the request of Tacticalwithdrawal I'm posting a test, please leave for him').

Edit - Archer (using a Civitate test account) and I (using a normal member test account) can post new threads in here so it looks like the problems may be in the past.

Anyone else having problems please PM me.

    Hi

    Heres a few ideas:

    1) Best score table. Take all the historical battles that come with RTW and list them. Have places for top 3 results for each battle. Gold, Silver, Bronze. This table is posted at the start of a thread the table 'owner' maintains it as new results come in. Players ppst the agreed evidence of results. Table can be extended to any available battles. No set timetable..this is a standing table.

    2) Multiplay SWAP Campaign. Like succession campaign but all members are active at the same time. Campaign set up with one turn played. Uploaded somewhere. Then it starts. All players who want to participate download and must play for 3 years only and submit result. All players are playing the same campaign at the same time. After say 4 days..the 'best' players position becomes the point for the next 3 years and we all play that game for another 3 years. Then the best position is selected again..and so on. This allows players to drop out or join in as the campaign progresses. We earn points per number of regions we had at the end of our turn..points tally up over 10 rounds.

    3) SWAP Campaign. Basically a sucession campaign...one player playing at a time. Impose a limit on number of turns and/or number of real days a player can play. Moves the campaign on faster.

    4) Pass on Campaign. We all start as a different faction. Play 3 years of game time. All pass our game onto next player in list. We play on now from their position, and as their faction...3 years...pass on again. ie you might play 270-268 As Julii, 267-265 as Thrace, 264-263 as Gaul...and so on.

    5) Team Swap Campaign. Organise in teams of 4. Each team playing same campaign and competing again other teams. Each player in team plays for 2 turns, pass onto next in team, 2 turns, and so on. After all 4 in the team have played the team positions are compared on the forum...ie after 4 game years. Points awarded. Play another round. This mixes cooperative play and competing. This might suit a team who wanted to play with a particular mod rather than vanilla. Depending upon mod there may have to be scoring adjustments.

Some of those ideas were used on other forums I belonged to (different game). I can post links to them if a moderator confirms such links are permitted.
    Regards
    Severous

    Thanks for the help!

I tried to post per your instructions. No joy.

The knee-jerk reaction might be to say that the problem is on my end. That is a possibility. I will try to post from a different computer at a different location. However, that would not explain the sharp drop off in new posts that I saw (from about 2 a day down to maybe 1 per week).

CLOSER TO THE ORIGINAL SPIRIT OF THE THREAD TOPIC ---> I like Severous' idea of posting high scores for historical battles. But make it the top 10 instead of the top 3, and limit it to 2 entries per player per list. That way some of us mere mortals would get to see our names in lights.

ok, PM me if it doesn't work and we'll see if we can get to the bottom of it.

I like the idea of top 10 (or 5), and I was going to limit to one entry per player (but you could have multiple tries).

Another thought I had is two 'leagues', one for VH and one for N? Then everyone can have a go.
