    Default The Curia, 60 BCE

    The Curia, Rome

The Curia of 60 BCE is now in session.

    Magistrates
    Censor Tiberius Antonius Commodus
    Consul Gaius Marius Aquila
    Marcus Quintilius Rufus
Pro-Consul of Graecia et Asia Servius Sulpicius Pansa
Pro-Consul of Hispania Sextus Tuccius Alexander
Pro-Consul of Sicilia et Africa Publilus Sempremonius Lucullus
    Quaestor Severus Caecilius Metellus
    Lucius Furius Philus
    Tribune Quintus Antonius Lucro
    Septimus Numerius Arrius
    Praetor Triarius Atilius Regulus
    Gaius Commodus Graccus

    Events
Random Roll Mining Rush. Mining rolls are adjusted as follows.
    • Copper - D6 roll, 1-6 required for success, 600 cost. 2D6*275 to determine profit.
    • Tin - D6 Roll, 1-5 required for success, 900 cost. 2D6*350 to determine profit.
    • Iron - D6 Roll, 1-4 required for success, 1,250 cost. 2D6*425 to determine profit.
    • Silver - D6 Roll, 1-3 required for success, 1,500 cost. 2D6*500 to determine profit.
    • Gold - D6 Roll, 1-2 required for success, 1,700 cost. 2D6*700 to determine profit.
Plebian Roll The people demand Social Reforms, for too long now have the various classes of Rome decided not just a persons' wealth but a persons' opportunity. They believe that their voices are unheard and that their leaders are blind fools.

    Pressing Matters
    • Pontic Invasion - The treacherous and belligerent Ponts have taken control of Roman territories in Lycia and Cilicia, however they have already overextended themselves. Rumours of of aggression from the nomadic tribes to the north cast their entire invasion in a pall of doubt.
    • Gallic War - The Arveni have become increasingly intractable with the demands they place on their weaker neighbours, which has lead to outright war between them and the Aquitani. The other tribes of Gaul are unsure of how to react to this, while the Allobroges feel that perhaps the Arveni are fighting a war with the wrong enemy...
    • Highway System - Recent neglect has resulted in the degradation of road systems throughout the Republic, several influential groups have been lobbying the Senate in the hopes that a speedy investment could resolve this situation.
    • Rumours of Pirates - Several rogue vessels have been making raids on Roman interests in the Strait of Sicily and the African Coast, for such action to be taken so close to Rome is rare and displays an unusual boldness on the parts of the perpetrators.
    • Western Trade - The lack of a decent port in Hispania is causing a great deal of frustration for the traders of Rome. Though they suggest no solution they have made it clear that any action taken would be greatly appreciated.
    • Reluctant Quaestor - A recently elected Magistrate has suddenly pulled out of his position, thus leaving a Magistracy unfilled. Perhaps favour could be gained in the nomination of a replacement? (Simple Rules: You must be nominated by someone, your nomination must then be seconded. Once there are three candidates or 24 hours have passed, whichever occurs first, those nominated will be put to a vote)

Metellus enters the Senate wearing his Toga Praetexta, a symbol of his office. He takes his seat and immediately begins reading through scrolls, financial scrolls. Severus muttered to himself, something about the plebs and how annoying they have been recently.

Aulus nods to his colleague "Ave, Consul Aquila." After this he took at and scroll that held the agenda "I think we should inform all about the Quaestor votes and perhaps nominate one common candidate to show unity for start, I know Severus is a capable man, but to be the single Quaestor can be too much even for him."

The words echoed around the mostly empty Curia

Consules, I will simply request that my colleague-to-be recognize my claim to account for civil finances, whereas he should account for military finances.

Marcus took a look towards Severus understanding that he could hear them. "Indeed Severus it is in our power to point out that the position is only for military Quaestor."

And I will nominate Spurius Cilo. There is no better example of a man who has followed the customs of the ancestors and the quaestorship would be an honorable start to his political career.

More senators gradually arrive. Aquila stands and waits for the talking to cease.

"Senators! Now that most of us are here, the curial session for this year is hereby open. Our first order of business is filling the vacant position of military quaestor. All those not currently holding a magistracy may be nominated; all nominations must be seconded. Consul Quintilius and I nominate Lucius Petrus Dextrus. Quaestor Metellus wishes to nominate Spurius Cilo, and Senator Pansa has nominated Lucius Furius Philus."

Censor Commodus enters in his Toga Praetexta and quickly got settled in his seat as he began making a census of what senators had been present in the assembly. After going though the form formalities he was required to do when entering the halls he stood up to give his support.

"I will nominate Spurius Cilo for Quaestor, as I judge him to be the most able to uphold the values and traditions associated with such an important senatorial office."

The Quaestor stood to address the Senate

Well, with that first order of business out of the way we must look towards other problems, namely the Pontic incursions in the east. It would appear that they have invaded Asia. It would seem Mithridates is at it again and I note with some disapproval that our military presence in Greece is minimal at best, probably unable to put up much resistance is the Pontics cross the sea. We must appoint a commander and take all the necessary actions to stop such an invasion before it can occur and reclaim our holdings in Asia.

Thank you, Consuls. I would do my best to serve Rome in whatever way possible.

Perhaps we could try to negotiate with them to buy more time for our Legions to get mobilized?
