    Default Baldness

The genetics of baldness has been studied a lot (given the lucrative market of course), but one finding that's been often reported is that the gene that contributes to baldness comes from the mother's father's side. What else research have people found regarding this gene(s), and another interesting question is what ethnic groups are more prone to baldness? Of course most men bald at an older age, but much of this regards early development of baldness (in 20s).

I see a lot of Germanic people experiencing early onset male pattern baldness, but this may just be a coincidence. Studies have actually linked baldness to the ratio of bodyhair, so I imagine that ethnicities with excess body hair will be more likely to experience baldness.

I'm 22 and rapidly balding, so much so that It'll probably be all gone on top by I'm 24/25. These damn scientists need to get on this. It is NOT acceptable for me to be bald. NOT AT ALL.
I'm as ugly and vile as it is I don't need yet another cross against me. It's ridiculous that in the 21st century things like smallpox, black plague and polio can be cured and even some forms of cancer but not baldness? Come on, it's killing me over here.

You're not alone, there's apparently some unlucky gene that makes some people like you bald so early. How is the hair situation in your mother's father's side of the family? And what is your ethnicity if I may ask?

I'm white as snow(Scottish). Unfortunately I don't know my real parents and have never met them so I don't know.
I know one guy who went totally bald at age 18! I'm thankful for my few added years.

It seems baldness is more common among European and Middle Eastern groups rather than East Asian and certain indigenous groups. I would also say the same for South Americans, though it gets complicated for some who have also considerable European ancestry. There is some dominant gene in the human genetic pool that triggers baldness pre-maturely (20s)

I agree, scientists need to rethink their priorities.

The genetics of this actually kinda interests me as my brother has been going slowly bald since his early twenties while I have a thicker head of hair than anyone else in the family.

    Much jealousy abound of course

definitely there is luck involved, though if your grandfather's family on your mother's side has a history of baldness, than the chances are much higher for you to go bald prematurely. For example, on my mother's grandfather's side I have plenty of relatives that went prematurely bald, they said starting at 18/19 when serving in the army they noticed their hair beginning to fall and from there it was just downhill, not to mention also my grandfather. Though I'm trying to figure out if baldness is more frequent among certain ethnic groups. For example, in Armenia you will find many, many young people who have male pattern baldness, it's pretty depressing.

It's because it all travels down to the upper and mid back.

I'm 19, German ethnicity, quite a bit of body hair, and have been losing (head) hair in varying degrees. Likely though it's caused by a combination of stress and lack of sleep, since I started losing it around the time I came to college over a year ago and it slowed down when I was home during summer. Now that I'm back in college I'm losing it again . I only get 5-6 hours of sleep each night, not nearly enough.

    Genetics and stress.

Genetics simply condemn you to lose or not to lose your hair in the long run, but stress can also lead you to very bad experiences in the short run, it can even affect young woman(happened to 25 y-o coworker)

Indeed, I find that it rounds out my image rather well, no?

I myself have a very full head of hair and only will lose it in my old age if I follow in my mother's father's footsteps. Everyone else in my family has a full head of hair.

Baldness is transmitted through generations in the X sexual chromosome. That is why you have to look at your grandfather of your mother side. If he went bald at a young age then your mother certainly has the gene (because his X chromosome is certainly in your mother since if it was not your mother would be a guy, and she isn't). Then the other X chromosome your mother has can be the "not bald" variety or another "bald" X. If it is the later you'll surely go bald. If it is not, then you have a 50% chance of not going bald at a young age.

But i think you guys are making way too much about this bald business. There are plenty of bald guys around who aren't affected in anything by it. Some even come to incorporate it in their individuality. Some guys even completely shave their heads to be bald. And, if you're already but ugly, going bald isn't going to make it worse. Just put some muscle in you. Nobody messes with the muscle heavy bald guy...

It's worse when you know that your mother's father's side of the family has a prevalent history of hair loss at a rather young age (early 20s) and of course knowing that your grandfather lost hair early as well. I guess I have no hope

Is baldness realy that important that it needs scientific research

Also for those that are going bald at a young age... please shave off your remaining hair, nothing worse then someone in there 20's with giant bald spot in the middle of what remains of there hair.
