Try sieging one or more cities and then ask.

It's hard to get it to work. They need to be convinced that they can't beat you.

No, its basically an alliance with money coming in from them. Plus, you get military access, and they shouldn't attack you. Although, they almost always do sometime or another.

EDIT: town watch, what is the point in that? Then, they will only have one city = low military = weak = taken over by someone else.

Leave them to 1 city left keep their trade off, constanly siege their last city then break at end. Then siege it again until they have no income and a riot then ask them.

I don't bother with protectorates. I just inset a large army into their towns and select 'enslave all'.

Not the same. As protectorates, they arent your slaves, they are your sub-ordinates. Slaves make your cities happy, protectorates give you money. Same difference, I guess.

WTF? God enslaves. We are children of God dammit.
If they say to you We have nothing to offer you or something like that: it means a certain price will allow for protectaracy. Otherwise, no.

it's hard to get them to be your protectorate, you have to attack them until they have one city left, then ask them to be your protectorate. What i don't get is that, you have military access, but you cant train their army, or is it that you only get trade from them?

protectorates make great buffer zones along borders you dont intend on expanding. eg, if you are gaul, and you want to invade italy or spain or africa, you could force the germans to be protectorates and leave them 3 or 4 cities along the rhine, they will repel most invaders from the east such as the sythians or dacians etc.. before they get to your border leaving you free to concentrate on your own expansion.

it takes on even more importance in BI, as the buffer territories make great places to fight off hordes before they get to your actual territory. once a horde is on your land it is automatically draining money from your cities just by being there... if you deal with hordes in protected territories your land remains unharmed as does your income - if you give them enough trouble they sometimes just turn aroudn and go the other way... if they dont you just destroy them before they actually cross your borders.

A really good way to keep protectorate subordinate is to deploy some soldiers in forts around the territories ands close to their cities it keeps them afraid or your faction. The drain on your treasuries should be supplemented buy the protectorates payments. And also if the protectorates are a border buffer your armies’ can supplemented the native and help defend these lands and buy extension your own lands I was able to keep the Greek cities and Dcaia (sp ?) as protectorates for about 100 years as a fought a war with the Egyptians .

Get a large army, a full stack, and make them take a diplomat to a nearby city and then make your agreement. This works best if they are almost destroyed.

Sometimes I have found out that they fear you even when they are strong. I once made Gaul a protectorate when they clearly were able to put up a good fight. I guess it was due to my legions presence near Massila...

Yes, military strength is also a factor. If you are clearly superior in military power, then they might fold.
