    Default Battles on VH

Campaign wise, it's not that difficult just make sure you focus on economy buildings first in your cities before moving on to military or religious buildings. However, on a test VH/VH campaign my Hastii (sp?) were destroyed by a Greek general when normally they would be able to hold the general long enough for hammer and anvil with my own generals. I tried two generals vs one enemy general and even then my generals took some impressive damage before killing the enemy general. So it a tactical and military standpoint, how should I handle things on VH for battles?

I do that already, but it's tough to hold my lines when they have a lot higher morale then me and there generals can slaughter multiple units of infantry.

    Tactics.
Use your units for what they are for.
    Become good at skirmishing.
Try to get superiority one place with out completely sacrificing the rest of your line. Use flanking alot.
Other than that (and there is a lot more), try looking here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=52410 Scroll down to RTW.
    Good luck

In early game Roman units are pretty weak. Don't train any Hastati. I found them highly useless in VH battles. Even spearmen are pretty useless since the AI is smart enough to avoid them. But you can build a few.

Instead use all your troop money for Equities. A few generals mixed with a full team of Equities can kill pretty much everything early game.

Don't bother training those 1st generation Roman javaliners and archers. Their range is pretty short and damage is horrible. Train a few of them to fit your needs, but don't bet your life on them. I suggest that you rely on Cretan Archers and Slingers instead. Ship one of your generals over to Crete and other nearby areas and hire all the Cretan Archers and Slingers available, and bring them to the front line. You don't have to take over those areas yet but grab those mercs, specially Cretan Archers. Extremely helpful. Do this once every 10 turns or so.

Another benefit of this is, you can focus on economy once you build that basic stables, since you are training nothing but Equities.

I just had the most bs moment of my RTW career. I was attacking a Greek city and all they had was a two or three units of basic missile units. I attacked from the front and back with almost ten units of infantry only to have two units rout and the others heavily damaged. Also, it took almost half of the battle time to finish off just those two or three units. Is this normal or is my game bugged?

Its actually normal if you didn't tell your troops to spread out to avoid missile damage during the charge. Those missile units in vh hurts. Alternatively if you didn't tell your troops to use close formation once they get within melee range they will also die and rout easily

It depends, but that doesn't sound very normal. Sometimes it's just luck....

Try to use missiles more than before, even with Hastati. The difficulty bonuses for the AI will only help their defence in hand to hand combat. They are just as weak against missiles as on normal difficulty, so use them well.

In the Mundus Magnus mod, many vanilla starting units are given 7exp which makes them absolute monsters in close combat, especially on VH. That's what made me practice using missiles. You'll pick up your own ways of dealing with them soon enough. There are plenty of guides around you could read but if you want more specific information I'm happy to answer your questions.

I forgot to mention it was on a wall.

Genius - I thought the difficulty only effected morale? In any other situation the one archer you get would be some help, but it would either be mowed down by their missile units and tower or not be able to do enough damage unless I got them on the walls without them being shredded.

CHIPS - I had forgot to say it was on a wall so yes they were peppered as they tried to place the ladders, but as soon as they got up, it was only hand to hand.

It affects attack too, on vh they get +7 attack and +7 morale.
