    Default If Mitt Romney loses

Does running for President but failing to win negatively effect future attempts?

If Mitt Romney loses the republican nomination, or he wins the GOP nomination but loses to Obama. Will that negatively impact his chances of winning the presidential bid in the future?

I ask this because of the current Republican candidates, I like Mitt Romney more than the others, but I prefer that Obama would win in 2012.

After 2 terms of a Democrat president (If Obama wins in 2012), the country will more likely than not go republican, that appears to be the trend. And Romney seems determined to be president one day, he will likely try again. Better him, being a flip flopper that does whats popular, rather than some Tea Party ideologue or something.

Nah, look at Palin, at one time republicans were in her hands. But as months began to pass another candidate took her spot of fame. Donald Trump.

In either of those two scenarios he's done.
"Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result. Eloquence may set fire to reason." -Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

When it comes to the Presidency, Americans don't like losers; Nixon is an interesting exception, though I suspect many regret his re-emergence.

Besides which, there's always a new generation of ambitious office holders that want that national prominence, anxious to get air time and trying to squeeze out the previous candidate.

Once the pressure was off him, Bob Dole turned out to be a lot less stiff, except in one area, and quite entertaining.

Well Nixon really never lost the first election, he had it stolen by Chicago democrat corruption.

The USA is one of the few countries in the world where perennial candidates don't fare well and where the politics are very dynamic.

If Romeny lose in 2012, it will be impossible to even run in 2016 because by then the current crop of young Senators and governors will there already.

I really don't think that they regretted Nixon, Nixon won 2 elections in a row and even after He got impeached Ford lost the next election in a thin Margin.

Whatever advantages Democrats got with Watergate was gone when Reagan landslided Jimmy Carter sorry ass.

Moved from the Mudpit. The Academy is better suited for this discussion.

Um, it's pretty clear that Romney will never become president. He might not even get the nomination this time around. Usually, the limit is two attempts.

If he tries again after losing he will become the GOP's new Harold Stassen. A man who started off strong who then had a long slow descent into irrelevancy followed by pop culture mocking.

Becoming a Stassen is a little bit much. I feel for the guy -- I wouldn't want to run.

Originally I would of thought Mitt would win(I also am fond of him and Huntsman) the GOP nomination but it's looking a bit shaky.

    As to your question:

Cant say for sure, the mood of the country might change after the 2012 elections and if he doesn't win this year I can see him trying another go at it, Ron Paul's been at it for some time so I can see Mitt having another go, he certainly has the funds to start another campaign in the future.

Though the republican field feels too fractured atm, after the nomination is done and they all get in line we'll see what happens, it's always messy business when you have a insurgent party plus occupy wall street may yet bare some sort of fruit.

Way too early to say if Mitt losing will ruin his chances for a further down the road campaign, he certainly needs independents to stay strong

Only he was actually the winner while Gore was not. Unlike Gore he did not want to take it to the courts.

I liked Bush, but thought he'd win the popular vote and lose in the College.

I actually called it, when I predicted if it came down to Florida, Bush would win, since his brother is Governor, but was rather surprised at the form it took; I also predicted if it went to the Supreme Court, he would prevail because of the ideological make up. Predictably, I was the most popular person in a household of Democrats.

But there were some very strange goings on in Florida, hanging chads and voter dissuasion.
