    Default Just another question

I have to ask as obviously this forum has a lot of people who use there computors very regulary and after reading a bill bryson book that touched on the matter briefly.

How maney people leave there computors on during the night or, in fact, any time in which they ar'nt using it for any reason.
I personnaly see no point in this as it is a complete waste of power unless it is doing a job (such as downloading a large file).

Do you do it? If so why?

I couldn't do it. I couldn't stand the noise, and it could catch on fire.

The humming is your friend. Kinda filters out the gunshots. Kinda.

I would leave mine on. I do leave it on all day even when I'm not there. But at night..the simple humming noise alone would prompt me to start throwing things at it in the middle of the night. My friends sleeps with his on, but then again, he also sleeps with a radio on too sometimes. Too much noise for me. Maybe some music playing while I'm laying in bed, but I don't fall asleep until I turn it off.

What, am I the only one who leaves my computer on all night? Simply too lazy to turn it off and turn it back on again, and it doesn't use that much power (the screen turns off after inactivity, remember?).

I don't sleep in the same room as my computer, so the humming doesn't bother me.

    lol that's truly lazy dude..
dunno if you pay the electrical bill yourself, but computers nowadays use somewhere between 50 and 100Watts when idle.

I just fold down the screen on my laptop and it goes to standby.

well for those of you who leave your computor on(Justinian) here are the figures from bill bryson's book(notes from a big country - good book).

One of the most arresting statistics that i have seen in a good while is that 5 per cent of all the energy used in the united states is consumed by computors left on all night.
According to US News & World Report, a weekly news magazine, the United states must maintain the equivalent of five nuclear power plants just to power equipment and appliances that are on but not being used - video recorders left in permanent standby mode, computors left on when people go to lunch or home for the night, all those mute, wall mounted TV's that flicker unwatched in the corners of bars.
so it really applies to anything left on in the home while not being used.
    shame on you all

I leave it on at night most of the times, because I'm too lazy to wait for it to turn on the next day  Also I have all my anti-virus and anti-defrag and registry cleaner.... and all those other programs scheduled to run at midnight when I'm asleep, so my computer will always be blazing fast

BTW I DO turn off the monitor and all the lights and stuff, so I'm not wasting that much power
