Default Unexpected problem with the launcher

I'm playing RSII from january this year and I didn't have any problems

But suddenly this morning when I tried to start the program a window was shown up ''AutoIt Error'' telling me:

    Line 3689 (File ''C:\SKN Program files\The Creative Assembly\RSII_Public\launcher\Roma Surrectum II.exe''):

    Error:Variable used without being declared

I'm using RTW Alexander while I'm playing RSII for the last 9 months and as I said I never had any problems in the past.
    I'm not using the steam.

I hope I was clear with my problem

Sounds like the launcher lost its path

I'm having this problem as well, although I am getting it off of a fresh install. I've never actually been able to launch from the launcher before (last time I got this to work, it was through steam) but I find myself wondering if it might also have something to do with my game hanging at the RS2 intro screen on startup. Default setting is no steam version so I'm wondering if that's a factor.

EDIT: I changed the pertinent settings in the launcher cfg but it didn't do anything. When I try to run the launcher I get the error described in the OP, and when I run it through steam it will boot, but hangs at the splash screen. Grr. Argh.

There is a corrected steam launcher, have you tried that?

I found the problem. Today I got the exact same error as mentioned above.

What causes the error is a corruption of your sound card drivers or sound card. Since the launcher uses music every time you click on it it launches a sound clip and if there is a corruption in the sound drivers or sound card you will get that error. So I fixed my sound card and used the launcher and it worked.

I don't know if we can make this an official FAQ and a solution to it.

    So yea

Thank you century. I've had issues with my sound card before and wouldn't be surprised at all if that's the problem. I will look into it and hopefully be playing soon. EDIT: Somehow my drivers were massively out of date. I'd have sworn I updated my drivers on this card within the last 6-9 months, but c'est la vie.

re: the steam launcher... curiously, this launcher "works" in that it lets me use it, but it doesn't actually start the game (possibly as per the above) and the graphics/illustrations were not displayed as they are in the normal launcher. It also has no sound and claims the music files are missing.

EDIT2: No dice. Drivers updated, same deal. -___-

EDIT3: It's telling me that I have RS2 installed to the wrong folder. I can only smile at the fact that the error message is not large enough to tell me what it thinks the full path is SUPPOSED to be, but I have RS2 installed to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\rome total war gold. I have run this mod successfully before, but for some reason it's also giving me error messages relating to the launch option window, even though I have the right switches (" -mod:play_Rome -nm -show_err" with the space and everything)

Well this seems to be more of a steam issue. Have you followed all the steps provided by the steam install instructions

I reinstalled (again) and it somehow works now. My theory is it was trying to run off of a different directory; the launcher seemed to think that RS2 was supposed to be installed to either desktop or My Downloads (the error message couldn't be made large enough to specify the path but I know it started with C:\Documents and Settings\myname\... and those two folders were the only others that contained RS2 data).

I had installed and reinstalled so many times that I just started keeping a spare RS2 folder on my other hard drive. As opposed to installing to a separate folder on my C: drive again, I just copied the RS2 data on the other drive into my steam install folder. The launcher still doesn't work (it never has), but I can still run RS2 through steam. I think what was happening was when I went to install RS2 to the new folder as recommended in the install thread, it assumed that said folder was RS2's proper launch vector, even after (I'm pretty sure) I deleted the data.

Will this issue at least be fixed in 2.2? Its really pissing me off not being able to use the launcher.

OP's problem and the resolution has been added to the 'known problems and solutions' thread here.
