    Default Warhammer Lore: Q&A

    Hey everyone,

I made a thread like this over in the 40k forum, and i thought, maybe one dedicated to Warhammer Fantasy would be good here.

Basically post any lore related questions here (Questions related to the mod itself should be posted in the Q&A thread above), and hopefully people can (And will) answer them.

    So..post away.

The campaign map does not show the "whole world"...

Where is Bretonnia and why is it not included?

Bretonnia was not directly invaded during the Storm of Chaos, but they did fight in the war. This is also represented in CoW with Bretonnian reinforcements.

I can tell you where Bretonnia is in the old world, but not why it wasn't included in the game (Thats a question for the mod team).

Here is a map of the Old World:

I'm currently reading the Von Carstein trilogy and i was wondering if anyone knew how exactly vampires got 'stronger' I know that for example 2nd generation vampires are stronger than 3rd generation vampires but do they get stronger with age like non warhammer vampires. The books keep referring to vampires becoming weaker or stronger but they don't really elaborate how they do so.

Vampires get weaker from generation to generation. The original vampires that started the bloodlines are immensely more powerful than some of the newer ones. However a vampires strength and power varies considerably even among successive generations. However creating new vampires does weaken the overall power of the sire vampire and each generation of vampires they sire will be weaker than the last, and as such they don't do this very often.

For example you could look at the Von Carstein Bloodline:

1st Generation - Vlad Von Carstein (Possibly the master vampire Vashanesh) - Very powerful, both physically and magically. Has all the powers of his bloodline in equal strength.

2nd Generation - Manfred Von Carstein - Still very powerful. More magically adept than Vlad was and possibly smarter. Physically he is weaker, but thats not always important.

3rd Generation - Konrad Von Carstein - Physically powerful but less magically adept than most vampires (Due to his personality not abilities). Other vampires of this generation are: Fritz, Pieter, Hans and Isabella Von Carstein. All of these have different aspects of Vlad's power, but all were considerably weaker. This is why Konrad rose to prominence.

4th Generation - Jerek Von Carstein was the last vampire Vlad sired, and he owe his talents more to his previous life than as a vampire. As he had killed Vlad while he was a human he was already a powerful warrior, and being a vampire only gave him enhanced strength. Still he retained his humanity in a way and this tore him between the life of vampires and the need to protect humanity against such things. This "weakness" is possibly the result of him being the youngest vampire Vlad sired.

5th Generation - These vampires were not sired by Vlad, but instead by his underlings. All of them were much weaker than the three main Von Carstein's and even the lesser known Von Carstein's. Still as vampires they are more powerful than almost any human. These vampires include: Mehlinger von Carstein, Constantin von Carstein and possibly Onursal.

Still it would seem that most vampire can grow more powerful with age as their long existences can allow them to accumulate vast amounts of knowledge and battle experience and these combined with their powers over dark magic, allow them to become more powerful.

So how do you kill a Warhammer Vampire, any different then "real" ones? And do they heal(when shot or something)?

Regular swords and weapons can kill a vampire, but it takes a lot of hits, and usually a regular warrior doesn't have the strength. Magic weapons are very effective at slaying Vampires however. Most traditional methods of killing vampires aren't really mentioned as being effective, but faith in the power of Sigmar can kill a vampire (Because Nagash cursed them for this to possible).

Still even if you kill a vampire it is very easy to bring them back. Thats why you have to burn all the bits in magical fire. Best not to leave anything behind lest the vampire hunt you down.

Are there pikeman in the Warhammer universe? Always weird that the Empire doesn't have them, seeing they were inspired by the Landsknechte.

I was just wondering, on many notes it said Nagash was the most powerful necromancer, how come when i looked him up on hammarwiki or w.e, he has like the longest list of defeats.... 5000 years of reviving only to be defeated once more... it looked like the story of Nagash was like a wimp desperately struggling to survive.... shouldnt the "most powerful necromancer to ever lived" at least be given to Vlad, one of the 1st generation of Vampires who dont have to turn into bone to be immortal?

Nagash has only had 2 real defeats. The first time he had just raised the dead of an entire continent and was very weak, which allowed a vengeful king armed with the deadliest weapon ever forged and guided and protected magically by the entire Skaven Council of the 13 to "kill" him. Even then he came back, slaughtered an entire skaven clan in a night. His second defeat came at the hands of Sigmar (The greatest warrior to have lived since Aenarion) who walked over mythic beings like they were nothing all the time.

Vlad however is not anywhere near as powerful a necromancer. Firstly Nagash invented necromancy. Second Vlad was only able to achieve the feats of necromancy he did because he had one of the nine books of Nagash. Lastly Vampires are not immortal. They can be killed and permanently destroyed to stop them being resurrected (Don't forget their need to feed, their weakness to faith and their weakness in sunlight). Nagash on the other hand found the one true way to be immortal; become a Litche. He bound his essence to several objects, which mean as long as they exist he cannot die, and one of these objects is the Black Pyramid (A structure that cannot be destroyed by magic or conventional means). Killing him won't stop him, as he simply regenerates inside his pyramid. I also don't think he cares about being a skeleton like creature very much.

It seems inevitable that undead armies usually are defeated. You can aim a giant threshing machine like undead battalions but if undead are incapable of taking initiative other than vampires which can only be created at the loss of some power of the creator... despite being very dangerous the undead power rests mostly on magic unlike even the forces of Chaos or the greenskins which have substantial manpower with its own will seeking a way to win.
