Figuring out the name of a book.

About 10 years ago I read a book belonging to an old roommate of mine. It was a book of short stories and excerpts of novels all in the fantasy genre. One of those stories really caught my interest, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it. I wonder if anyone may be able to enlighten me.

Here are the few things I do remember from it.
1) I believe what I read were two chapters from the same novel or at least the same story line if more than one novel
2) A black ship. This may have even been in the title or just the name of a chapter.
3) The main character had a sword that was personified as having a voice (maybe) and a blood lust of its own. (no it has nothing to do with Turin or JRRT) If I remember right the more the sword was allowed to drink blood the stronger it became.
4) Not futuristic fantasy or sci-fi.
5) Judging by the condition of the book itself I'd say it was written at least in the 80's if not earlier.

I know it is not much to go on but if any of this rings a bell I would love to know.

Sounds a bit like something out of one of Moorcocks Elric series.

Yes, Moorcock sounds right. If it isn't, it's still worth checking out.
